Snow days don't "slow down" when you still have to work. Quite the opposite.

Why are you blaming teachers. Teachers do not make this decision. What do you want us to do?

Who's blaming teachers for the snow day?

We're blaming teachers for pushing back on a sensible make-up day.

1/29 is not a sensible make-up day if you need that day to finish grading 120 projects that were turned in on or just before 1/24.

If you want teachers to give challenging assessments, give us sufficient time to grade the work. Even if 1/29 remains a professional day, I will need to grade all weekend, taking breaks only for bodily necessities. Rushing through the evaluation of something that was worked on for weeks is unfair to the student.

The other alternative is that I move up the due date three or four days to accommodate the loss of grading time on 1/29.

Sounds like you have a plan. Go with it.

God, you’re precious. You aren’t PP’s boss (no, not even with MAH PROPERTY TAXES). Zip it and take a seat.

I do not see a "torrent of abuse". I see out my window that the roads are fine right now, yet I expect there to be no school tomorrow.

And teachers will take the blame for that, even though they have absolutely no control over school closures.

And my roads aren’t fine. We had a plow come through midday yesterday, and now it is a packed sea of snow and ice.

Same here. It's like that for two blocks until we get to a road that goes out of the neighborhood. That road is plowed out to major roads.

It was fine. It was a slow 2 blocks, but drivable.

Why do you think you can't drive on snow?

The issue is that the BUSES cannot drive on snow. The majority of kids in our school travel by school bus each day. If the buses cannot safely transport these kids, school will be closed or delayed.

I just drove to an appointment in Rockville. My street (which intersects with a main road) is the only street that has been plowed so far. That surprised me, but I assume they will finish the rest today, because there’s no way that school buses will be allowed on those streets.

The main roads are plowed, but the melted snow will re-freeze tonight and be icy early in the morning, I imagine. Based on past experience with MCPS, I’m guessing two hour delay.

Buses absolutely can drive on snow. They're heavy. Who told you they can't?

Good question. Over the years I’ve heard that the reason they close so often is due to the buses. And one time they stayed open and there was an accident (I can’t remember the details but it was in recent years). Am I wrong?

I have heard its because we don't have heated bus bays like they do up north, and the busses can't run well because the engines and/or oils are not able to heat up properly. Maybe that's another myth...

The story keeps changing. Is it the cold not allowing buses to start, or the snow/ice they allegedly can't drive on?

Does the story keep changing or have the varying weather conditions of different storms created different challenges?

Because no one expects — nay, demands — that the federal government or their doctor’s office warehouse their kids for them, at all times and under any and all weather conditions.

Inevitably, whatever the decision may be and whenever it’s announced, the angry posts will commence. I mean it’s DCUM after all

Calm down and enjoy your kids.

In my travels today I passed by a few schools that are still cleaning up. Can they not make the call.for delay, regular open or whatever so we can plan child.care?

Why are you being so condescending? Many people here are not from upstate New York or New England and are not used to driving in snow and ice

DP my parents have never lived in NY or New England or anywhere with a lot of snow or ice and they can drive in the snow. They just use common sense.

Yeah my DH is from the deep south and he doesn't understand it either. Granted, he has to make his way to work on days where everyone else can telework so he just kind of had to learn to deal with it. But we have neighbors that don't dig out their cars for days after a snowfall and then don't understand why it's frozen solid when they decide they need to get out...

Assume you will need childcare. At a minimum there will be a delay but I think 90% chance closed. I could see the before/aftercare programs opening though.

Right. So if buses in Maryland can't drive in snow, there need to be more snow days. Silver Spring gets an average of 12 inches of snow per year, Damascus over 20 I beleie. And then it all melts and re-freezes, making road and sidewalks impassible for days.

But some years we don't get that much, and then you have wasted snow days and kids miss out on summer. Are teachers even allowed to work more than 180 days? I thought the goal was get to 180 but not go a day over.

It’s not going to be a regular open. Make your plans. 1 plan for a delay and another for closure.
