Don’t have kids if you are this dependent on others raising them.

You mean don’t have kids in the US.

I hope they will add make-up days before then. HS kids could use the time for their AP classes.

The earlier makeup days are 1/29 and 3/31.

1/29 is too early to be used as a makeup days. 3/31 is Eid al-Fitr. Let’s not take away the Muslim holiday again.

1/29 is plenty far away. The Board could approve it this week.

1/29 is a grading day. When do you think end of quarter tests and projects could be graded? Should emergency overtime pay be authorized for teachers?

Teachers are salaried employees.

No money.

Teachers should get overtime pay

We don’t get quality either. The state sets the 180 rule. Our hs teachers sent out emails with assignments due tomorrow. Kids should get credit.

You had teachers email today with work that must be completed on a snow day?

We already did. The time to complain about making 3/31 a make-up day was when we made the calendar. It is ridiculous to rehash the same argument that was already made and rejected through an open, democratic process.

The crazies like this in MoCo are exactly why this be automatic once we go over the built-in extra days.

We do complain, but the board likes to gamble. They win if the day gets to stay as a day off. If not, the bias of the system shows.

Thus, the proper time to complain is ALWAYS, especially when the impact is imminent.

I wish they would just call tomorrow off right now. Easier to move forward with plans when there is some certainty

Anonymous wrote:I know MCPS reads these threads. Could a solution to the make up day problem be to have 3/31 be a half day? Teachers would still get grading time and we’d get credit for the make up day. I’m not Muslim but google seems to think Eid doesn’t begin until sunset so if that’s true, it could work (correct me if I’m wrong).

I’d personally prefer tacking a day on to the end of the year that no one goes to.

No, eid actually begins at sundown on 3/30. We celebrate it throughout the day on 3/31.

What happened to code purple (virtual for snow days)? That should be an option moving forward if we use both snow days this week. Would rather that than making up days on June when everyone is checked out.

They have to call that ahead of the storm, so it is too late. They would have had to call it Friday.

Why is 1/29 too early? If we use 3 this snowstorm, 1/29 is perfect.

I mean going forward for any future storms?

If they reduce it to 170..people will still keep their kids out at the end of the year, before vacations, some Fridays etc.

That is not remotely on the table anyway. The state requires 180.

As of 1:50pm the website has
"CODE RED - SCHOOL SYSTEM CLOSED - Tuesday, January 7, 2025"

Yay for early decision about the obvious!

They're not hourly employees. Salaried employees don't get overtime.

And their workload overall wouldn't be changing. Yes, it might be a bit compressed to the extent they can't get ahead of it, but they wouldn't be working more hours.

Agree…. Going forward go virtual. MCPS should be prepared for this option for future storms.
