Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
| Here’s your periodic reminder that the school board doesn’t care about the mental health of students. If it did, they would prioritize stability over all else. |
So if we have a Crossfield kid at Carson in 7th grade now, will they have to go to a different school for 8th grade? |
| Even if the RIO folks get their HS wish, it seems like these scenarios blow up the ES and MS boundaries all over the place in that section of the maps. The Navy Island is gone in all 3 for example. |
Good question. I assume this will be the following year. But, with this leadership, who knows. |
|
Most of Lee's Corner is well under two miles to Chantilly and almost 5 miles to Westfield.
Most Bull Run kids are not close to either Westfield or Centreville. A few are close to Centreville and some are closer to Westfield than Centreville. |
The best part is that several of the RIO people get moved OUT of Crossfield in some of these scenarios. |
I know, because their kids are all AAP and get to stay at Carson. I really can't stand those snooty moms. |
| Since so many of us might be impacted at different levels, sending the link to the FAQs below that have answers to "grandfathering" kids at their current school. Note these new scenarios don't start until the 27-28 school year, so keep that in mind when reviewing the "grandfathering" rules. |
Under no scenario would I have imagined moving Crossfield from Carson to Franklin. It is so much less convenient. Even in scenario 1, where they go to Skyview, they have them at Franklin instead of Carson, which is nonsensical, and eliminates one of the benefits of going to Skyview, which would have been that they would be moving with a cohort of friends from middle school. |
I'll have to check the map out again. But, if Carson stays at Oakton, it certainly moves sense to switch them out with Oak Hill for Franklin. |
So, staying at Oakton is convenient? Not a good argument. |
| It would be kind of funny if all the school communities that are unhappy with proposed changes make their own “Rooted in … insert high school name” campaigns, websites, and petitions. 😆 |
They may yet. What this really reminds everyone is that Michelle Reid is utterly over her head when it comes to logistics and operations. She's a "big idea" person, a sound bite, a ready smile, and the latest cliche ready to be shared online. What she isn't is a good manager with any sense of the county whose school system she's paid a hefty salary to run. We went through the total shitshow of a boundary study conducted by Thru Consulting. One bad idea after another, one "problem" replaced with two new ones, and ultimately a hasty retreat that resulted in a grab-bag of incremental changes that will do little good and unfortunately weaken a few pyramids. The follow up? Hire a different consultant who yet again starts out by swinging for the fences, which no one asked for and few expected at this juncture. Doesn't mean they'll end up making all these changes at the ES/MS/HS level. If they did, it would be inconsistent with what they ended up doing with the county-wide review. All it means is that Reid doesn't know the county, its schools, and its neighborhoods well enough to give a third-party consultant appropriate parameters to come up with recommendations. We're getting another menu of crazy options that people will criticize, and then they'll get cold feet and auction off the new boundaries to those who yell the loudest. It will be a bit different because they have to set new boundaries for Skyview, but otherwise it's probably going to be deja vu all over again. |

Which scenario do you all like the most (or hate the least)?
I think Scenario 2 is the cleanest and the least disruptive. |
