Clearly Rice and Warren are the most credentialed picks, just not clear if the campaign feels it can manage the negatives in either case. Another choice will mean electability was a major concern.

Kamala was the natural first choice for the name recognition. She didn’t want to gamble on Biden. The recent op-Ed by Willie was planted to let people know Kamala was asked but politely declined.

Then Biden needed to delay to find a plan B.
