The proposed scenarios boundaries would
be a lot less ridiculous and straight forward if there was no classist favors and social engineering. Wealthy areas being sent all the way to stay at overcrowded Oakton when at least four high school buildings are closer? A new island for Westfield that is one low income apartment? Walney Oaks pulling strings and getting moved while we watched? GMAFB. |
..??The neighborhoods right next to Skyview ARE going there. |
Turns out that the school board, even the all Democratic school board, is not immune from public opposition. That’s democracy in action. The problem for you is that the school board members are very far left, and even they have come to realize that your proposed equity play would run the school system to the ground. UMC families are the tax engine that provides most of the tax base to the schools. They have not yet killed that golden goose (though they’ve severely malnourished it over the years). What you and your fellow poster want is an exactly equal education across the county, but that comes at an extreme sacrifice of school quality. You should face facts that if you can’t get this through in deep blue Fairfax, it’s not achievable right now. As we’ve heard from posters on this thread, if you want a different schooling situation, just send your kid private. There are probably commune home schooling options available. |
You all should’ve fought this purchase at the beginning when the consequences to centreville, chantilly, and Westfield were foreseeable. That’s when your FB’s could’ve been given. None are available now. Sorry that your school is being degraded, but that’s on a school board that would rather pat itself on the back than really analyze the knock on effects of the school at the outset. |
Someone organizing these boundaries logically would have the Franklin Farm area going to South Lakes, Chantilly, Skyview, or Westfield. The proposed Westfield boundaries are a travesty and nonsense. Drawing a circle around one apartment building? Moving only low income areas? |
| Leaving Oakton and Chantilly over capacity with 800 empty seats at Westfield and 400 empty seats at South Lakes is appalling. |
As has been noted, those who go to Chantilly live very close. Why should they get ripped from their beloved, close school to attend a school further away simply because FCPS needs to backfill a school that they put in this position because they decided to purchase KAA without community feedback prior? Maybe if they had the balls to put Crossfield plus Fox Mill at Skyview, then they could have left more kids at Westfield. |
Its all one school system. Why should the kids at Westfield lose 1/3rd of their teachers and classmates and be reduced to very limited course options compared to all the surrounding schools? |
| Because the school board picks winners and losers based on politics and Westfield was the designated loser here. |
With 2,000 kids their course options become “very limited”? 🤣🤣🤣 |
The kids from Westfield being assigned to Skyview should never have been at Westfield. That is the problem. Ironic: I looked at the petition from the Centreville people and their justification for staying at Centreville is the same justification for putting Westfield kids at Skyview. There are people who live equidistant from Centreville and Westfield who could be assigned there to relieve Centreville. There are people who live equidistant from Chantilly and Westfield who could be assigned there. I agree that Crossfield should not be assigned to Oakton. Without this school, Chantilly would still be overcrowded. Westfield would be overcrowded, too. But, the logical solution is to send Walney area--including Walney Oaks to Westfield. And, to send half of Bull Run to Westfield that is equidistant from Centreville and Westfield. Walney Oaks is halfway between the schools and right next to current Westfield neighborhoods. Those areas between Centreville and Westfield are next to current Westfield neighborhoods. Some are not close to either school, but the travel time is the same. |
Because 1/3 of their current classmates are isolated geographically and socially from the school and the other students. Pretty simple. |
There is really no reasonable scenario where they could have left more kids at Westfield. The Westfield kids going to Skyview are right next to Skyview, and far from Westfield. It would have made zero sense to leave them at Westfield. |
It’s not anyone else’s responsibility to backfill Westfield. The decision to purchase KAA was not something the community got to discuss or give feedback prior. |
