DP. It’s so obvious when a poster like you is coming from a place of extreme privilege that you want to preserve at all costs. You really can’t understand that people at South Lakes and Westfield don’t want to see their schools gutted? |
| How much money has fcps spent on boundary studies this year only for very little to have been resolved? This situation is criminal and highly inequitable |
I am not interested in social engineering the public school system into the ground in the name of equity. I think the skyview purchase was rushed and probably not well thought through. But when someone comes on this board and whines about the far left school board being racist, it’s laughably absurd. |
Increasing the quantity of your whiny posts doesn’t make your faulty logic more valid. |
Neither Westfield or South Lakes is being "gutted." And, Skyview is not getting a school of "extreme privilege." It is going to be a good comprehensive school including all kinds of students. The kids in this area deserve a school that is in their community. If you are upset that they are leaving your community, you need to realize that some people don't like long bus rides to Westfield or IB at South Lakes. |
They are far left in some of their statements and far right in some of their actions, especially those relating to boundaries, where for 18 years they’ve followed a consistent practice of only reassigning kids to schools that are similarly or higher rated. That’s a practice you no doubt favor, to the extent you approve of any boundary changes, so you’ve concluded the best way to ensure it continues is to label the board “far left” and deny the board’s actions contribute to widening existing disparities among schools. |
No one said Skyview will be a school of “extreme privilege.” Try and keep up. It’s other schools that are being protected while South Lakes and Westfield will be left well under capacity. |
I don't know what's wrong with you, but it's stupid to blame an entire school for a vocal subset of the community at that school. |
South Lakes and Westfield have plenty of construction, they will fill up quicker than you think. SLHS will be at 85%, that is not gutted. No one would complain if Dogwood was moved to Skyview and not Fox Mill or Floris because the Dogwood students are FARMs students, their departure doesn’t hurt the test scores. It’s not about losing students, it’s about what students are leaving. The anger is that the schools that were moved against their wishes to boost SLHS test scores leaving. Maybe if the county had removed IB and replaced it with AP this wouldn’t be happening. And Herndon High would have more of its top students because there would not be an easy to pupil place, close by school to move to. |
Polo Fields is closer to McNair, but also adjacent to Floris. Were it in Floris, they'd probably send the buses up Monroe. |
You're only using total population. SLHS total includes about 200 in a true special needs program isolated from the general student body so total gen ed is drops to about 75% not 85%. From a programming/staffing perspective, removing UMC Floris/Fox Mill will reduce the demand for higher level classes. |
It’s definitely closest to McNair. Not to mention crossing Fairfax county adds a lot of time. The townhouses next to Herndon metro off of Sunrise Valley (which are right across the street from Polo Fields) are Coates. The neighborhoods across the street on the Fox Mill road side of the neighborhood is Floris. So it’s not that wild that Polo Fields got pulled into Carson/Skyview. |
The only social engineering going on is in the opposite manner of what you think. Neighborhoods right next to Skyview for example are not going there. Neighborhoods within a couple miles of South Lakes are going to Madison. And a lot folks who should be going to Westfield are not going. All rich neighborhoods. So yeah buddy, there is social engineering going on. Probably in the way you like though right so you wouldn’t call that social engineering. |
There are plenty of neighborhoods that are much closer than Fox Mill and especially Floris that could be shifted from other high schools like Madison and Oakton to pull SLHS back up but we all know that won’t happen. |
I think it would be a bit odd if kids didn’t make new friends at a new school. High school will be quite challenging for kids if they only stick to their AAP groups. Parents should encourage their kids to branch out. |
