Part way into the turn when it stopped for people in crosswalk. So at an angle when the BMW hit the front left corner.

If what you wrote is correct, the Toyota would have been hit in the front right corner.

They've certainly (re)entered the chat.

No ricochet would have happened if Toyota was hit on right side. I feel like Toyota nudged the BMW by hitting from left side

Hopefully your kid understands physics better than you. If not, maybe there’s a correspondence course he can take from jail.

Again (and again), no charges have yet been filed. But looking at what has been described -
1) The Toyota was making a left and yielded to the pedestrians crossing who have the right of way.
2) In stopping to let the pedestrians cross, the Toyota may have blocked oncoming traffic.
3) Only the BMW hit the Toyota, so there did not seem to be any other oncoming traffic that was impacted.
4) If the BMW was speeding, the Toyota likely started the turn while the intersection/road was clear.
5) If the BMW was speeding, the driver loses the ability to claim the Toyota caused the accident as per Virginia law.

I'm having a hard time imagining that no one else here has ever been in a similar situation - you start making a left turn while the opposing traffic is clear, and then need to yield to crossing pedestrians that have the right of way. Heck, it happens to me when I'm turning into my driveway! Anyway, the charges should tell the story.

You don’t make the turn until it’s clear.

There can be multiple errors.

I'm sure it was clear. At 90 mph, it becomes unclear real fast. That's why there are speeding laws in the first place.

90mph?

Pull that out if your a$$?

At least 70 to 90. Wanna make a bet ?

Sure. If you lose, you can’t post on DCUM anymore.

Fine by me. I'd rather post on an alternative Fairfax site anyway.

Great. Bye!

They don’t mind fiction there.

Fcked up VA law or not, he made a huge error too.

Yep - the toyota certainly did hit the bmw and send it on it's way in the fatal trajectory.

No matter what the speed BMW had, the Toyota should have waited as IT DIDN'T HAVE RIGHT OF WAY!!!!

This is exactly right. The Toyota did not have a clear path. You'll see when your drama settles down and the math and facts come out.

There is very limited visibility of the cars approaching the intersection from the other direction, which is why the BMW should have been going much slower approaching the intersection. You can’t avoid what you can’t see.

Spewing this garbage to try to excuse your kid/friend from killing two people is disgusting.
