Oberlin quality did not go down in 10 years. Oberlin produced it's 4th Nobel laureate just last year. In terms of alumni outcomes, Nobels, Rhodes, Fulbrights, MacArthurs, Trumans, Emmies, Grammies, Oberlin is in a league with Amherst and Swarthmore. Kenyon and Denison are not in the same league. What has changed over the years are the US News methodology with more emphasis on diversity... |

I think that these schools are regarded today exactly as they were 40 years ago. Neither better nor worse. |
of course you're just being salty. UVA has gone up over the years. |
There was an article about schools that were well-regarded in the 1960s and these were on it. |
No, they aren't. They are the type of a school that's out of fashion now - small, rural LAC, located where the winter is pretty cold. Yes, I know that many kids are still dreaming of Amherst and Williams, but move one tier down, and the kids that used to dream of those now prefer the big state schools. |
I actually think that Muhlenberg and Union have gone up since the 80s. Not familiar with the others. I was thinking that Vassar seemed to be regarded as the top in the 80s/90s, and now it is mid-top. Seems like it is still a fantastic school, not saying anything about the quality, just the prestige. People my age think it equates with top 10, but it is current in the low 20s on the US News list (not sure what this actually counts for) and seems to be easier to gain admission than Wesleyan. Love the current president, though. |
UVA was at one time the top ranked public university in USNWR. it is now 4th with other publics very close in ranking points. So you could certainly make a case it has declined. |
I think Brown has gone up. Cornell hasn't really changed much. |
