Probably on 27th or 28th

Feeling super anxious for more boundary updates as my family searches for our forever home. I love the Oak Hill - Franklin Farm part of Herndon but my spouse is very hesitant to buy a house zoned for an unrated high school…

It is a wonderful area. The high school will be just fine. Ratings change, in any case. How old are your kids?

DP. Your kids are a long ways off from HS and many things will change between now and then, in ways we cannot even predict right now, so even if you bought a home in a “highly rated” pyramid now, there are no guarantees.
I live in 20171 Oak Hill and love it here so much.

My kids are currently in South Lakes high school and this is what I will say about it: Great Schools Ratings do not matter. SLHS does not have good GreatSchools ratings or whatever, but there are many great teachers there and a critical mass of college bound kids who care about school. That is enough. GS ratings are meaningless. What matters is what goes on in your house. Better not to raise kids as hothouse flowers anyway.
The other schools in the area like Oakton and Chantilly are nice, and Skyview is likely to shape up to be a good school given the demographics and the teachers who want to be there. My younger kid has opted in hopefully to reunite with middle school friends.

No need to feel anxious. There is no scenario in which Franklin Farm ends up zoned to a bad high school. Skyview will be a good school, if that is the case.

Peer groups matter. Kids aren't in your house when they are at school or hanging out with friends outside of school.

But Skyview will be fine even if it's not Oakton HS quality. It will be somewhere in between Fairfax HS and Chantilly HS, most likely.

Sure, but what goes on in your house affects what sort of peer groups your kid ends up identifying with. And as long as there is a significant group who share similar values and care about school, your kid will be fine.

Skyview will be fine. There are a few posters on here who spread a false narrative that it's just going to be AAP kids from Carson there. And they may be over-represented in the ranks of those initially opting in to the school. But the longer-term demographics will be different than the initial opt-ins.

Your spouse is a moron.

Skyview will end up like Westfield. 50% of the school is coming from Westfield and they are its toughest elementary schools. The other elementary schools will offset it some, but Westfield will improve slightly without those schools.

Floris is a tough elementary school?

Probably referring to Coates and McNair (without the out-of-boundary AAP kids). Westfield will be impacted by who they decide to backfill the school.

What nonsense. The poorest school, London Towne, will still be at Westfield. The schools pulled out are a demographic mix.
