My Fitness Pal and sugar?

Anonymous
I just started using My Fitness Pal to track my calorie intake. Is there a way to adjust the amount of sugar or other diet components? It says I'm supposed to have 29 grams of sugar a day total, and I'm already 45 grams over that! I have eaten a greek yogurt, a banana, baby carrots, and grapes that have each contributed a whole lot of sugar to my diet. I can understand swapping out the greek yogurt with added fruit for a plain yogurt, and that's fine, but I'd still be way over this total amount it says I'm supposed to be eating. Aside from totally cutting out fruit, which I don't think is healthy, is there any way to meet this very low limit?

Grapes are way too high in sugar for someone who is concerned with the sugar in their diet. Bananas are also high in sugar. I'm trying to reduce the sugar in my diet also and I will split a heavy sugar item and pair it with protein. So I would have 1/2 a banana with a boiled egg as my morning snack and the other half with a cheese stick as my afternoon snack.

You can make the adjustments by going to "goals" then "advanced goals"..... Good luck!

You have indeed picked the highest sugar fruit and the highest sugar vegetable out there.

However, I do agree that 29grams is too low. I had success with MFP and never paid attention to anything other than the total calories and I lose weight like a rock when I use MFP.

You can go into your setting and manually adjust all your goals - I would highly recommend doing it because the MFP goals are notoriously off. You can google how to do it. Aim for a 30/30/40 split of fat/protein/carbs. And honestly, as long as you are not snorting sugar packets, don't be too concerned about your sugar intake. If weight loss is the goal, stay under your calories and you'll be fine. Yogurt and grapes won't hurt at all.

Most low-carb diets suggest sticking to berries or that women cut out fruit all together (http://www.dietdoctor.com/lchf)
I've found this to be a pretty great guide.

Also check your greek yogurt. Switch to Fage Total. It's the lowest carb yogurt, with high protein. I can eat one of these in the morning, and not worry about feeling hungry until around lunch time.

I wonder why you are only allowed 29g of sugar?

What are your stats?

I'm 153 and 5'9" and trying to get to 145 and am allowed 57 and 1500cal.

I already ate 28 grams of sugar and all I have logged today is:
Omelet with Kale, cheddar, and chix sausage in it.
1/4 cup raw/unsalted trail mix (sunflower, raisins, cashews)
Plain Unsweetened Yogurt cup
Chicken Curry (no rice no dairy, just chicken and heavy spices and onions)

How in the heck could someone possibly keep their sugar grams under 29?! Especially in light of what I'm eating? I have no added sugar in my diet at all.

OP here - I have no idea, I never adjusted any of the amounts and that's just what it gave me. Thanks to PPs for pointing out that I can change it. I am trying to watch added sugars, processed foods, etc. but didn't want to feel like I was being punished for eating fruit!

I am 5"6', 142, trying to get down to about 135 but will settle for 137 or so.
