| smoking and I am never looking back (that's awesome to type btw). I spent a lot of time and energy focused on quitting and noting else. I am now 60 lbs overweight but I can breathe and do not smell like shit. How do you get rid of the weight when you are essentially a couch potato? |
|
Congrats!!!
Take it one day at a time. Go for a walk around the block. Tomorrow go a little farther. Then a little farther. Then get the couch to 5k app. Food--what are your vices? Soda? Ice cream? Find healthier versions, improve the quality of your food--more veggies and fruit, less pasta and bread. Then download a calorie tracking app. You can do this, one day at a time. |

Walk!
You have already done something amazing, so don't feel the need make a bunch of other huge changes right now. Walking is excellent exercise, and now that it is spring, you can get out and enjoy the beautiful weather. You can slowly build up muscle and endurance, and then explore other types of exercise. Let me add my congratulations! It's a huge accomplishment. |
| Couch to 5K for sure! Gradually, cut out the obvious bad vices (soda, candy, etc.). |
|
Sounds like you really want to make a change.
You start a new chapter and focus on losing weight AND eating healthy. You just start moving. Start with walking and build up. Stay focused. If you can quit smoking, you can lose weight. Cut out the soda and ice-cream/cookies/pies/cakes and over processed food. |
| OP here, thanks all. What's worse, diet coke or coffee? I need caffeine! |
| Diet coke for sure. The artificial sweetener has no calories but increases your body's cravings for sugar and other high-glycemic-level foods. Good luck, OP! |
+1 diet coke is full of chemicals. |

Get rid of soda-diet or regular. They have alot of sugar and do no good for you or your teeth. Plus, it makes you want to drink more.
You don't NEED caffeine, you just want it. Drink tea for caffeine. At least it has other benefits. Go for unsweetened tea. Hot or cold. There are tea without caffeine too. When you start a routine exercise and eat right, you don't feel as sluggish throughout the day because you're consuming healthy food and liquids. It gives you the right energy consistently. When you crave for sweets or snacks in the afternoon, give yourself 15 min and it will pass. If you must, just make sure fruits/nuts are within reach instead of chips or cookies. |
Couch to 5k to get some general fitness back and then find something that you like to do -golf, yoga, Zumba, swimming, running, cycling, whatever. Whatever works for you is the best exercise. |
| OP here - feeling discouraged. Finally ready to address my long term fitness goals and attempting to diet and exercise daily with no results to speak of. I actually gained weight but have not smoked still. I know people will say that quitting smoking was such a huge accomplishment that I shouldn't push myself but I'm not wired like that. Can anyone relate? I just want results! |
| Can you hire a personal trainer for like 3 sessions or so? It might be best to hear it straight from a professional. |
good advice. I am going to go to a gym for the trial period and get the free consult. hopefully that works. can't really afford a trainer for the long run or at all. |
| It doesn't work for everyone, but maybe try a fitbit - if tracking would be a motivator for you. |
What have you tried? |
