We are way overdue for common sense gun control. How long ago was Sandy Hook? Twenty first graders were shredded to bits and we didn't do anything. https://www.bradyunited.org/legislation enhance & expand background checks (close charleston loophole) extreme risk protection orders safe firearm storage crack down on dealers gun violence research And these are just the BASICS.
Also better mental health care for children and young adults. The Sandy Hook murderer had serious mental health issues that were left untreated.
This is easier said than done. There will always be people in varying levels of mental distress and not always treated. I'm all for expanding mental health care and access, but look at the recent cases. They probably did have access to care if someone mobilized it. They didn't. And it's not just about access. Psychiatric care is extremely complicated, treatments and medications don't always work, the side effects can be hard to tolerate, some drugs can in rare circumstances cause homicidal ideation, cost, insurance won't cover hospitalizations long enough to be effective, etc. Quite frankly, talking about mental health care is a huge distraction from the #1 cause of these shootings. Unfettered access to guns. This absolutely has to be dealt with. Depression and psychosis aren't going away, no matter how good our mental health care is (and it's bad). And neither are shootings unless we have some common sense gun laws to delay access, require licensing, registration, etc.
Tell me about it. Everyone in my family has mental health issues. I know how complicated it is, and also how it important it is in ways you definitely have never considered. Thanks for lecturing me about my life and how unimportant my concerns are compared to yours and even explaining to me the issues I have faced all my life and why nothing can be done about them while common sense gun legislation doesn't happen either. Sorry to distract you from your important urgent agenda that hasn't advanced in decades with a two sentence post.
