Has anyone considered the consequences of statements like this - that everybody simply cancel all plans until further notice? Do you know the impact that would have on people? And I don't mean the airline or Disney or the corporation issuing the refund... I mean you, and me, and the majority of Americans. Because let's say people stop travelling and going to the movies and going to shows and going to restaurants... do you know what happens eventually? Those companies lose money and do you think they're going to pony up from the CEO's pockets to make up the difference? No. They're going to fire people. And do you think the government, with it's deficit in the trillions, can step in and make up the difference? Sure, but what are they going to cut in order to do that? **You are not wrong in saying that travel is a huge factor and shouldn't be taken lightly, but NEITHER should what you are saying. The economy IS a big deal to EVERYONE, not just for a politician trying to get reelected. Wanna know why it's important for reelection? BECAUSE THAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR FOR VOTERS. |
France & Germany rates going way up, predictions on whether they will move to level 3 CDC travel warning like Italy did? |
I'm the "give us our money back" pp. I think the travel companies will take a hit but will recover a lot more quickly if they do right by travelers right now. If I am refunded, I am definitely rebooking as soon as it seems safe to do so. If I am stiffed, there is NO way I will book with this company in the future, even if I ultimately decide to go on the current trip. |
Both countries have 25% of the cases that Italy currently has (and rising). Which means the CDC will probably wait another 11-13 days to increase the warning level. The exact number of days are uncertain but the point is - there's no vaccine even in prep for COVID-19 which means cases are going to certainly rise. And all of European is on spring break along with the U.S. within the next month - so more exposure rates. |
Uh huh. They don't care. There's always a new buyer and they get your money now. When you want to rebook in 2 years or 5 years, they will already have fresher clients. |
I am flying in April to visit my grandparents in an assisted living community and bringing my young kids to meet them. I am now worried about infecting them. But they are ailing now and I don't want to miss a chance to see them. |
You can think about temporary measures as a ding to your wallet. I’m focusing on temporary measures that definitely impact me economically but are better for communities and lives of my fellow humans. Personal irresponsibility that could critically injure or take the life of someone else because I just don’t want to miss Disney or the Bahamas or wherever is not my style. I’m sure the economies of places like Singapore and Hong Kong that have responsible governments and responsible citizens will bounce back and likely a lot quicker than we will as we drag this on as long as possible because heaven forbid we are inconvenienced for a little while. |
I agree there will always been more new clients, but in a business that is heavily dependent on repeat customers (cruising, although it is very maligned on DCUM, is heavy on repeat business) I still think there will be a longer lag in recovery if they don't take the high road now. But as we are young and healthy we are likely going to still take the trip if we can't be refunded. But I don't think I will cruise again, even if the trip goes well. |
But at least in Singapore and Hong Kong the citizens are all under the same rules. Why should someone in the US voluntarily stay home when so many of their fellow travelers are still going. The impact of staying home is much smaller then and its a race to the bottom. Its not like I have a guarantee of health if I stay here. |
Rented a beach house in Kiawah, SC for Spring Break. We plan on going. |
That's the thing, though... it's not just a "ding to your wallet." A recession/depression affects everyone for a long time. Look, I'm not saying that we need to take steps for the better of our communities, but what I AM saying is those steps ARE A BIG DEAL. It's not smart to pretend that they aren't. |
I'm confused. Are you on the side of people traveling, or staying home? |
When did I say those steps were not a big deal. I’m full aware of the huge economic impact. Ignoring a pandemic that multiplying is by the day is also a big deal. Ignoring that actions we take effect the life or death of others is a big deal. Ignoring the impact that this will cause on our healthcare system is a big deal. Ignoring the fact that when this thing gets out of control in your community and everything shuts down anyway which will impact your local economy too is a big deal. It’s also not smart to ignore these things. Acting preventively is always smarter than reactively. |
But if 10% of people cancel travel and 90% of people still go, aren't the 10% of people just schmucks then? Because 10% of people staying home isn't going to do much. |
No the 10% would be smart. The 90% would be selfish schmucks. Don’t be insecure, taking the high road doesn’t make one a schmuck. Isn’t this what you should be teaching your children? |
