White ward 5 charter school parent and I'm in category 1 |
I cannot think of any jurisdiction in the united states that has documentation procedures in place that would prevent undocumented immigrants. The debate is that if they are here, you want to integrate them and not create a perpetual underclass of non-citizens like in some European countries. Also studies show that early intervention preschool is the best way to create productive members of society through learning soft skills such as eye-contact, negotiating, showing up on time, and following directions. Really, universal preschool should expand funding so that society/parents are not fighting over the crumbs of taxes leftover for the next generation. http://www.npr.org/sections/money/2011/06/13/137109349/the-friday-podcast-the-case-for-preschool |
Honest question, what is wrong with a perpetual underclass? Not like we don't have one now with a couple of different levels. All people are not created equal and lord knows all adults aren't. Who do you want to pick our strawberries, fight our wars voluntarily and serve us food? Document the exaisting underclasses and give them a hard but consistent road out and sit back and enjoy a disproportionate amount of resources. Not only is it the American way but by posting here it is a strong indication that you are enjoying the fruits of the system that you decry. The only real variable is if we are honest about it and if we honor the way out once they put in the work. But without a path a revolt is likely. |
Universal preschool and pre-K are great, but why should DC taxpayers shell out to provide free pre-K to children from Prince George's county? This is especially the case when PG has underinvested in education while spending profligately on stupid projects like casinos and when fraudsters from MD basically cheat DC kids out of scarce spots. |
No. Starting premise is that the "reporters" staked out schools where the majority of kids are black. They stated in story that their primary concern was schools where the majority of kids are black. They posited that the people "scamming our schools" are black people living in Maryland and the "proof" they published consists of pictures of black adults and children, though who knows where the photos were actually taken because this "news" organization follows no journalism standards. I have a degree in journalism. I have a $260k HHI. I've lived in DC in DC since 1988. I have DC plates on my car and drive my kid to a public school in DC. I don't support residency cheating. But I AM FUCKING OUTRAGED that someone would stake themselves outside a school, photograph children, publish photos online, follow people home and publish their personal information in the guise of "news." Like every other working parent, we cobble together a number of resources to ensure our kid is cared for while we're working the jobs that feed and clothe him. None of that is is anyone's business, but it may include an aunt or cousin who will pick up said child and take him to their house in Maryland if I've got work that keeps me from pick up. We have done all that's required to prove that he's our child and he lives with us at a DC residence. The fact that some people cheat this system does not in any way make vigilante stalking and "investigation" okay with me. My own TOTALLY FUCKING LEGAL use of MD-residing relatives for childcare is an example of how positively wrong this reporting can be. And being wrong in even one instance of public shaming is far more egregious to me than any residency shaming. That's the goddamned starting premise. |
Exactly right. |
Why not take your argument one step further and ask why waste the spots on black kids who parents don't pay much if any taxes all while 1/2 of those kids aren't going ever finish school anyway only to end up in jail. Come on I can almost read it between your lines racist |
Maybe what's wrong with a "perpetual underclass" is that the feds and SCOTUS say local schools cannot deny education to undocumented immigrants. http://wsbt.com/news/local/special-report-why-undocumented-immigrants-are-allowed-in-local-schools ""In June 1972, the Supreme Court issued Plyler v. Doe, a landmark decision holding that states cannot constitutionally deny students a free public education on account of their immigration status. By a 5-4 vote, the Court found that any resources which might be saved from excluding undocumented children from public schools were far outweighed by the harms imposed on society at large from denying them an education. "For thirty years, Plyler has ensured equal access to education for children regardless of status, but anti-immigrant sentiment continues to threaten that right. States and localities have passed measures and adopted unofficial policies that violate the spirit—if not the letter—of the Court’s decision." http://www.pbs.org/tpt/constitution-usa-peter-sagal/equality/education-illegal-immigrants/#.V32x5bsrLIU |
You are really blinding yourself with your own prejudices. The previous poster said nothing remotely racist. |

My kid went to LT last year for PK3, luckily we got him in to a charter school for next year though the proximity to home with make it much less convenient. A few personal observations about the obvious residency cheaters at LT:
- The article is correct that there are tons of MD plates outside of school every morning. - When we had a birthday party for our son we got about half the class in attendance, a few others just said openly that they didn't want to "drive in" on a weekend. One boy told my son he could come if he stayed with grandma for the weekend, since she lives in our neighborhood. These same kids seemed to skip all of the neighborhood parties. - After the snowstorm when they had some delayed opening days and our roads and sidewalks were cleared but many suburbs were not ,the same kids were not able to make it in to school. |
only sensible comment on here!! nero fiddled ... |
So is your primary concern getting a good education for your child or routing out and punishing kids who are "driving in"? Through the snowstorm that also paralyzed all of DC. And impacted people who live with and/or visit their grandmothers. And whatever other information about people's personal lives we can determine and (hopefully) post online and prosecute. I mean, do you have names and photographs? That's the shit we value here. |
Not trying to root out or punish anyone, nor share any individual's personal information. I'm not the author of the Daily Caller article, just a parent with observations about the obvious residency fraud at LT who wants my kid to get a great education. |
So yeah, you should be alarmed if your child is regularly being shuttled from school to a house in Maryland. People are pissed off at the blatant fraud that is commonplace at some schools and that has gotten the attention of this click-bait website. Perhaps you should express your frustration to your councilmember, who might be able to get some answers out of OSSE, because "all that's required" is not enough to keep people from cheating the system. |
