This is complete bullshit. This incident is not a mass shooting event. This incident is the direct consequence of the increasing frequency of kids in MCPS bringing guns to school on a regular basis. That is not happening everywhere. Not even in DCPS. Just stop it. Blaming society for a direct failure of MCPS is inappropriate. In fact, if there is anything we want to blame society for, it’s the question we should address our local politicians of why we are seeing increased poverty in our schools and more criminal behavior. This is not happening in Howard County or Fairfax. Trying to redirect the blame for what happened today on society and away from local leaders will only ensure that this incident will be the first of many more. If you don’t want that then people need to start taking responsibility and aggressively making change. |
My friends’ kids go there. It is a good school at its heart. The teachers in the aviation program are solid and committed. The principal is planning to retire in a few years; if this makes him move faster, then that’s not a bad thing. |
Hate to break it to you but times have changed. Ghost guns don't set off metal detectors (the bullets will, but they're small / hard to find). X-ray machines work, but are expensive. (but if MCPS can spend 1.6M of Covid funding on Kid's Museum and $160M+ on electric busses they must be flush with cash?) |
| I’m surprised we haven’t heard from the kids who were in the classroom with a shooter. |
I have no doubt that it’s a good school. I personally believe that it’s a good school. What I find bullshit and unacceptable is blaming society. This was not a random mass shooting event. This was a direct result of the increasing number of guns that are being brought to schools and nothing being done to stop it. |
Bullshit. You don’t even know what a ghost gun is. They most certainly set off metal detectors. |
| Shout out to the School Nurse. Read Ehrlich’s tweet sounds like she was great at her job as school first responder. |
That’s awesome that she is being recognized. It would have been even more awesome if the interim superintendent recognized her as well but somehow couldn’t find the time after recognizing all the administrative staff. |
There is no hiding arrests for gun possession and school shootings. |
From a quick google search: https://baltimore.cbslocal.com/2021/12/14/15-year-old-student-charged-for-bringing-loaded-handgun-to-reservoir-high-school-howard-county-police-say/?amp I’m sure it’s happened in Fairfax, too. It happens everywhere. |
According to Elrich's statement, the school nurse's actions were life saving. Has anyone heard any update of the victim's condition? |
I can always trust Elrich to address what's most important. Not displeased with his handling of Covid as well (he does better than other elected officials). This McKnight person is ridiculously incompetent, she arrived late, was not dressed for the occasion (yes, it's important!), and her speech and letter were awful. Not to mention her inept handling of the Omicron surge. She needs to go ASAP. |
|
Prior post was correct, pls do not focus on McKnight’s appearance. That only distracts from the real issue, competency.
At this point, she appears to have been a distraction and delayed dismissal. On top of the unneeded snow day. Give her time and I’ll wager that she will fail sufficiently enough that she will leave. However, she’ll end up leading another school system somewhere. MCPS is a tough system to manage now. |
No doubt. 'Ghost guns' are basically 80% lowers that are made from aluminum or other alloy. They are blocks of metal that require several hundred dollars of tools and a pretty reasonable skill set to mill out the block to turn it into a functional firearm. A completed 9MM will cost about $800 for the frame and the slide. Magazines are extra as are optics and ammunition. And gun smithing tools. They are not inexpensive, but some hobbiests like to build their own pistols. The media has labeled them ghost guns because that are not required to be serialized as long as they stay with the person who built it (this is an ATF statement), or is passed down to a family member. If a weapon was to be transferred or sold it would have to be serialized and the transaction would have to occur through a licensed FFL agent. I have several registered, serialized firearms and that serial number does nothing more than note that I was the one who purchased it. That's all. If I were to shoot someone at 100M and disappeared, there is zero chance the round could be traced back to me. Please stop believing what you see on CSI. Registered firearms only help if the weapon is recovered at a crime scene. Also, it is illegal for a person under the age of 21 to possess a firearm. If you agree with that, maybe we should have a law that enforces the law that is already there. I'm so tired of the chirping about more gun laws. They are there already. I hate to break it to you, but criminals don't tend to care about the laws. There are plenty of gun laws that responsible gun owners already adhere to. |
| Can we talk about the EIGHT MINUTE DELAY between the 911 call and locking down the school? That is unconscionably long. |
