CCES HGC

No feedback on CCES HGC specifically but our child's 3rd grade teacher told us that some kids will qualify for compacted math in 4th grade, and some will not, and that same will apply at the HGCs - so theoretically a child could be in an HGC and not be in compacted math, although I would guess the majority are.

It's interesting how much the math has changed in the HGCs in the last couple of years. When my daughter was in 4th last year the lowest math group was 5/6 going into 7th grade math in 5th grade.

Any feedback on CCES?

To be honest, we have been unhappy with CCES. Our DC is in 5th grade there. One of the two 4th grade teachers is awful, and the principal refuses to do anything about it even though parents have complained for years. It was a very rough transition in 4th grade.

Our DC did fine at CCES, but we will not be applying for our 2nd grader next year.

The math curriculum is the same at the HGC as in your local school. If your child is three grades ahead (instead of just one or two grades ahead), then there may be better opportunities in the HGC. Otherwise it is the same.

Yikes consider CCES HGC-- which teacher? Anyone have any positive feedback?

I think it is sad that they don't recruit teachers that our excited to be part of the HGC program.

OP, I am not the PP here, but have also heard about problems in the HGC at CCES over the last few years. The number of students admitted to the Takoma Park MS Math/Science magnet from CCES has gone down tremendously and steadily over the last 4 years. It's not clear to me why that is. I had a child in the program several years ago. We were quite happy at that time; math acceleration was regularly offered to HGC students in a range from on grade level to 3 grades ahead. Now, with the change to C2.0, I don't know what math is being offered in the HGC. I do know that on the home school side of CCES all students who had been accelerated under C2.0 were taken off acceleration and put back on grade level no matter how far ahead they had been. Then last year, some students were placed in the new compacted C2.0 4/5/6 math compacted into grades 4 and 5. I am sure these changes affected the HGC as well, since students in the home school program had often been mixed with HGC students in math in order to make full(er) classes so that more advanced levels could be offered. Many parents at CCES protested the deceleration, but the principal refused to budge. She is very difficult to work with.

I encourage you to ask the principal about these issues directly at the Open House so that all parents can understand the changes and impacts. BTW, C2.0 changes also affected the HGCs on the reading/social studies side as well, but I'm not sure what happened with this at CCES.

Surprised by the negative comments. DC is quite happy there and we are happy with it.

Barnsley one is on Wed. Did they address the GT curriculum under 2.0 at yours? Are things changing?

The way 2.0 math is handled is consistent across all HGC's (and all schools in the county for that matter). All 4th graders in the county have only 2 options under curriculum 2.0: they can either take Math 4 or Math 4/5 (otherwise known as compacted math).

That is a county wide/curriculum 2.0 mandate. It has nothing to do with the HGC and it doesn't vary across HGC's.
My child is in compacted math at his HGC and I would say that, even though the compacted math curriculum would have been the same at his home school, at the HGC there are very strong math students so the entire class moves at a good pace and gets into the math topics in a different/deeper way than they would be able in the home school. For example, the home school would have had a compacted math class with, say, 25 kids. But, only a couple of those kids would be the stronger math kids in the grade. At the HGC, you have the 25 strongest math kids from a variety of elementary schools all together in one classroom. That changes what that compacted math can do.

What about GT curriculum for language arts/social studies under 2.0?
