To be honest, we have been unhappy with CCES. Our DC is in 5th grade there. One of the two 4th grade teachers is awful, and the principal refuses to do anything about it even though parents have complained for years. It was a very rough transition in 4th grade. Our DC did fine at CCES, but we will not be applying for our 2nd grader next year.
OP, I am not the PP here, but have also heard about problems in the HGC at CCES over the last few years. The number of students admitted to the Takoma Park MS Math/Science magnet from CCES has gone down tremendously and steadily over the last 4 years. It's not clear to me why that is. I had a child in the program several years ago. We were quite happy at that time; math acceleration was regularly offered to HGC students in a range from on grade level to 3 grades ahead. Now, with the change to C2.0, I don't know what math is being offered in the HGC. I do know that on the home school side of CCES all students who had been accelerated under C2.0 were taken off acceleration and put back on grade level no matter how far ahead they had been. Then last year, some students were placed in the new compacted C2.0 4/5/6 math compacted into grades 4 and 5. I am sure these changes affected the HGC as well, since students in the home school program had often been mixed with HGC students in math in order to make full(er) classes so that more advanced levels could be offered. Many parents at CCES protested the deceleration, but the principal refused to budge. She is very difficult to work with. I encourage you to ask the principal about these issues directly at the Open House so that all parents can understand the changes and impacts. BTW, C2.0 changes also affected the HGCs on the reading/social studies side as well, but I'm not sure what happened with this at CCES.
