CCES HGC

He is responsive and keeping a file.

There is also a form to fill out to report problems. To make headway with removing an educator, you must document, document, document. In 6 years in MCPS, I've seen one principal, one administrator/staff person and one teacher removed and in each case it took getting a GROUP of parents together, voicing complaints and documenting, documenting, documenting. These instances were all in BCC feeder elementary schools similar to CCES.

Is this true?!?!?! If so, its one year too late for my kid.

Hopefully the principal will leave, she is so damn abrasive and provides zero communication to parents.

I couldn't believe how underwhelming the 4th grade HGC was... my kid liked it, it was more like playtime than school. Incredibly lazy teachers, just teaching out of the workbook. passing out assignments. I've never seen so little work come home. Pathetic.

I heard that too (from a very reliable source). Too late for my kid. Shameful that it took this long.

I felt the same way although I do think the level of work is higher than at the home school. My DC was happy. The other kids are smart. I guess it's worth it.

I agree the level of work was slightly higher than the regular classroom and the kids are generally better behaved than the regular student population but if I had to do it over again, I would have kept my child at her home schoo, it's a lot of travel and they never make friends outside of their classroom.

I asked the principal about bringing in guest speakers, it was something they promised at the beginning of the year. She was very defensive and nearly bit my head off, I think she has personality issues, she can be very charming until you ask any questions.

Overall, my child really enjoyed HGC, notwithstanding the principal and 4th grade teacher who garnered so many complaints. The other students are a great bunch, and made for a supportive and stimulating environment. The 5th grade team was a big improvement over the 4th grade team. This past year the students prepared and gave "TED Talks" -- which, I have to say, was a fantastic exercise. My child blossomed, learned how to construct a good argument, and gained a lot of confidence in public speaking. I suppose there were times I thought our child could have been challenged more, but there were also times when our child was stretched. All in all, we think it was a good experience, and we (including our child) would have done it again. I just wish the very negative experience with this one teacher (and frankly, the principal too) could have been avoided. But even that turned out to be a good life lesson and an opportunity to forge new skills. You can't always avoid unpleasant people...

Anyone know what the 5th grade school supply list is yet?

I am glad we dodged a bullet and didn't even apply for this. My daughter will return to her home school, which is around the corner from our house. Whew!

Also, is the summer reading and math packets on the CCES website for the HGC kids too?

Does anybody have more info more about the teacher leaving CCES HGC? Is this true or just a rumor?

Are you sure it's the 4th grade HGC teacher that left, because there was a 4th grade teacher in the non-HGC program whom many parents have also had problems with.....

She won't be teaching in the HGC this fall, but will remain at CCES, presumably teaching the non-HGC kids.
