CCES HGC

Anonymous
My child was at CCES HGC last year in 4th (2014-2015) and loved it, and we really liked both teachers. The Math and science teacher was a very new teacher - which I found puzzling, but I think she was fine. Probably not as good as she will be one day. The other teacher is very very good, great at times. The kids love her. I wish there has been more and more creative homework. But the cohort of kids is AMAZING- so bright and excited about learning. If you get in, you are crazy to turn it down.

I've just read through this whole thread and have some questions. Thanks to everyone who has posted.

1. Do the 4th grade reading/writing teachers actually correct all written assignments? To date, we've found that teachers miss corrections on homework and we're concerned our DC is not learning.

2. What % of the kids continue to Eastern vs. Westland?

Thanks!

Another np here with a question -- I've seen many comments to the effect that the most special part of an HGC is the peer group. I am not challenging the truth of the statement, but rather with what information parents analyze that, because my child (3rd grade) has rarely spoken about her classmates (and even if she did, I don't know what she could tell me that would indicate if these kids are enthusiastic learners, the level of discussion, etc.). I know she is in the most advanced reading, spelling and math groups, but she doesn't give me any information about those kids or any other kids in her class. I think the HGC- Chevy Chase sounds excellent but I am a bit jaded after 3 years of parents at our school saying this or that is great about the school, teachers, etc and then our experience proves quite different.

I don't know anything about the CCES HGC, but my child is at a different one and even in the three weeks of school thus far, I can tell a difference in the level of interaction among the students. I think that since all the kids are "new" to the school/class/program, they have forged a bond and since the program is designed for more collaborative projects and more discourse among their peers, they have a higher level of experience with each other than their typical classroom. I could be wrong, as we're new to the program, but it's what other parents have stated whose kids went to our HGC before and what we are gathering from the beginning of the school year.

Is this Chevy Chase Elementary's HGC program? A bunch also go to Pyle. It pulls from a wide area.

Yes, I was referring to CC HGC program. Thanks for your answer.

Do the teachers take more time to correct homework and school projects than in the regular program?

My DD goes to the other HGC. Her teacher has never returned and corrected my DD's homework so far. I'm just wondering when my DD can get the feedback.... I think the feedback is the most important part of the study. Sigh....

Ugh. Learning from one's mistakes is critical.

In my kid's year, six (I think) out of 52 went to Eastern (could have been 7, but I think 6). Three or four went to TPMS, two or three went to the lottery magnets (Parkland, Argyle, Loiderman), one or two to private school, the rest to Pyle and Westland.
