Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
Not all kids from Fox Mill want to go to Skyview. What is your point? |
I know of at least one VERY VOCAL Crossfield family that has a child who asked to opt in to Skyview but the parents said no. So in many instances it's literally JUST the parents, not the kids, that want to remain at Oakton. |
One family does not mean “many instances.” Skyview will be a niche school until it has set boundaries, a sizable enrollment, and full academic and extra-curricular programs. |
You are missing the point. |
You are pushing a fake narrative. |

I don't think that there is an ES where there is a majority feel on moving to Skyview or staying at the base school. I think there are parents who feel strongly one way or the other and a lot of other parents who don't care and just want them to make the choice and set the boundaries.
I don't think there is a majority either way at Fox Mill or Crossfield and people who are advocating one way or the other are stating their opions. I know I don't speak for all of Fox Mill and I don't think I have presented it that way. I think more people who want to move from Fox Mill have posted here and more people who want to stay at Oakton from Crossfield ahve posted here. I think there are parents who want Crossfield to move who have posted here, with one particularly aggressive poster dominating that position although there are clearly others that agree with wanting to move. |
You're forgetting the remaining South Lakes parents who want Fox Mill to stay to keep the scores and school rating up. And the remaining Oakton parents who would be happy to see Crossfield moved so Oakton isn't overcrowded again in 5 years once all the new housing developments come online. And those of us who just want the most bus routes shortened to save FCPS time and money on transportation. |
PP wasn’t forgetting anything. She was just accurately summarizing what seem to be the sentiments expressed most frequently among those who may be directly affected by the Skyview boundary adjustments. We just went through a county-wide boundary study where FCPS deferred to the loudest parents and paid scant attention to shortening bus routes. You’d have to think they’ve turned a new page to believe that, after ignoring the long Forestville commutes to Langley, they would now prioritize ending the shorter Crossfield commutes to Oakton when there’s a sizable group of people who want to remain there. |
Omitting is the better word. Regardless, the point still stands that there are more people with opinions on the matter than just the vocal ones discussed here. Dismiss them if you want, but someone with an agenda you are ignoring may very well have more sway than all the hand-wringing people on DCUM. |

Guys, this is getting utterly out of hand.
I know all of you want what's best for your kids, but some of you are looking at this particular situation of a new school opening where you want what's best for existing high schools and Skyview. Rather than worrying so much about sports and test scores, think ahead and treat this new high school like a gift rather than a cure handed down to you by Queen Grimhilde. We need less pontificating via biases, and more respect, courtesy, open mindedness, and also to look at what makes the best sense instead of looking at what you want. I know this is a contentious process like many other boundary changes conducted by this school district, but 5-10years down the line when Skyview is more established, all of you will be thankful this high school opened. 20171 has been divided for years and this gift of a new high school we've been given will unify us once and for all. Crossfield is not Oakton, it is Herndon! Fox Mill is not Reston, it is Herndon! Oak Hill is not Chantilly, it is Herndon! Floris, McNair, and Coates, all Herndon! So suppress your privelage and welcome all of 20171 in open arms! |
There won't be space at Skyview any time soon for six ES feeders, and it would be nuts to spend more money on top of the money already being to spent to expand (and not just retrofit Skyview) to handle six feeders. Of course, if all these schools are truly "Herndon," then taking advantage of some of the excess capacity at Herndon could be considered. |

For perspective-
The primary ZIP codes for Herndon, Virginia, are 20170, 20171 (goes by Oak Hill as well) , and 20172 (goes by Dulles as well). The town is located in Fairfax County and is part of the 703 and 571 area codes. ZIP code 20170 covers the central and downtown area, while 20171 and 20172 cover adjacent residential and commercial areas. Skyview HS is located in 20171. Herndon HS is located in 20170 |
Who cares? It's not like every zip code has its own high school. High schools serve kids from multiple zip codes and kids from a single zip code regularly are zoned for multiple schools. |
The Post Office assigns postal codes and decides the name. Therese often do not line up with the U.S. census definition of a particular location. They do it for convenience of their routes. For example, there are postal codes that say Arlington, when the address is located in Fairfax County and vice versa. There are even addresses with postal codes in different states than where the actual address is located. I wouldn’t make my argument based on postal codes. |
