Hayfield Football Coach Fired

Anonymous
Wish folks would not let these hayfield boosters distract from the main issue (whether SB is left or right-leaning, height of particular players etc. - who cares?).

The two pertinent issues here are: 1) VHSL found Hayfield cheated by inappropriately recruiting 20+ kids to a public school, by providing different accounts to VHSL inquiries and sanctioned them accordingly and appropriately. But had flaw in their internal process which resulted in delay of punishment. Will be adjudicated on the merits on Dec 4th.

And 2) that FCPS/Reid seem intent on ignoring and obfuscating the above and tripling down and supporting this inappropriate behavior by FCPS employees for reasons unknown. Safe to say more to come on that one.

So let’s consider this the only game where you could say they were even is RB, and they lost. Did you hear complaining, oh we played private school , oh we can’t compete. I’d venture to say he’s def thought them to try and not be afraid if nothing else

Oh dear, point went right over your head.

whether right or left, SB is derelict in not demanding Overton be put on administrative leave immediately after VHSL sanctions came down. This is an ongoing investigation(s), he should not be on school grounds until all are complete.

Because their designated Public School Hit Piece writer is too busy vilifying trans kids right now to worry about something as lowbrow as sports.

While coaches and parents all across the county advocated for forfeiting, the Edison team took the field to contest their playoff berth on the gridiron....and not a courtroom or strong-armed bureaucratic office.

Edison just scored first and walked to the buses leaving as winners

The Edison kids are truly the real winners. It's amazing how this SB and Reid sent them into this knowing it would be a slaughter. If only Edison had hired Overton instead and he had brought them all those players.

Disagree. This is an unfair situation for the adults to put them into. Hopefully no one gets injured.

OK yeah, I forgot about that aspect. A team stacked with big, huge recruited players when most teams only have 1 or 2 big kids. Reid, did you think about this? The optics look bad for Reid no matter what happens here. I think she's not going to last.

I've been to the games. Hayfield is a lot of things but they're not big or huge. They're actually quite average to small for football players.

You can look at the rosters to compare size. They are much bigger in numbers in numbers and height/weight. They have a player who is 6’ 7” 270.

You are either making it up, this kid lied about his height (wouldn't be the first time a man does this) or he never goes to games. No one that tall touched the field last night. My husband is 6'6". My sons are 6'4 and in MS and my daughter is 6'1" and a junior. I can spot tall people from anywhere (I'm the short one at 5'8") and no one on the field was that tall. I also went last time Hayfield played us and no one that tall was on the field.

It isn't necessarily the player "lying" about their height. Coaches will often add an inch or two and some pounds on the rosters. They do it in college and professional sports, sometimes, too.

Yeah they are trying to sell these kids to college coaches.

Are you PPs talking about the same Post? The Washington Post?

They did not cheat. They provided proof of residency as required by FCPS. It was investigated and cleared. Period.

I know lots of kids who attend Arlington Schools and FCPS who do not live in those Counties. They are not the first or the last to beat the system!

I don’t know about that one, but yes, the Post is on the cusp of veering to the right reflecting the overall disarray in liberal media boardrooms right now, like at MSNBC, etc. Also, with the Post, the Bezos/Musk rivalry plays into the shift to the right for the Post.

Re the Post prep sports coverage, didn’t Wolcott report on the latest re Hayfield a week ago? I think they are waiting for another big development before another full article goes to print.

A lot of APS students have previously lived in the Maryland suburbs. After complaints, they do residency checks now however. After the removal of the Maryland students, one formerly overcrowded middle school was suddenly under capacity. The planned boundary changes were then averted.

I do believe these Hayfield players all live within the boundaries of the Hayfield school zone. That’s why Ms. Reid is siding with Hayfield in the matter.

NP. You can attend another district if a) there is capacity and b) you pay the tuition. If they haven’t paid tuition, then they should definitely be out.

Are the Hayfield coaches allowed to participate in the playoffs? I’ve followed this off and on. If they recruited outside their pyramid and kids still live outside it, this seems like a violation. I dont know the rules though. I know a baseball coach recruited an IMG player within the past couple of years. That family moved in district though.

sorry not sure you're adequately following the story - the key phrase above is "inappropriately recruiting". What you've described above (eligibility) is no longer the pertinent issue (though there's still many questions regarding how FCPS did that investigation to be sure). But the two pertinent issues are the ones stated above. Continuing to conflate "eligibility" and "recruiting/proselytizing" obscures the issue.

This will continue to be the challenge. Reid trying to force narrative that is and was only about eligibility. Freefield boosters throwing up any other distraction whether that is player size, skill, emotions, what they think should be the rules. The key here will be to continue to actually see for yourself and not be steered off course. There is no need to fight about eligibility, that’s not an issue know. The test is noise too. As other poster calls out: Hayfield broke rules. Reid backed Hayfield. School Board backed Reid. Both actions should be addressed and actors held accountable.

BS. Period!

I do not believe one little bit that all of those families picked up and moved to be in bounds for Hayfield. Not one little bit. I think Reid's investigation did no actual investigating.

Why did this coach want to stay at a public school anyway? If he's so great, why isn't he at some private school that has the budget to pay him and put his recruits on scholarship?
