Whitmer may help more broadly in other key midwestern states, but Biden likely doesn't need her for MI. Especially if he picks a Black woman. I really don't know which way this will go.

If he picks Whitmer it will be because she has the least baggage and he’s going with the “do no harm” tenet. Seems to be the only one who didn’t generate an immediate oppo dump. Other than her race doesn’t seem to be polarizing in any way and has garnered respect both with pandemic response and standing up to Trump.

The immediate GOP response will be "Biden bailed on picking an AA for VP. He hates Blacks."
''

Yes, criticism from the GOP on "the Blacks" is super-persuasive.

Why announce early? What if it was Michelle? Imagine announcing your VP at convention ... and out walks Michelle freaking Obama!

What if it were Michelle. The conventions are virtual. No one is walking out.

Clinches MI and PA and maybe helps elsewhere in other parts of flyover country, Biden’s “gaffe” perhaps suggests he may think African Americans will support him 96-4 in any and all events. Harris becomes AG and S.Rice becomes sec. of state. Maybe the thought is that the vaguely racist male swing voters would be turned off by a woman of color VP. That’s the post, folks.

Really? Why couldn't white women see themselves in Hilary Clinton? I mean what does whitmer have Hilary didnt have ? Are you actually serious with this argument ? It has a weird combination of being pathetic and unbelievably dumb.

Hrc is a Wellesley YLS grad - the average FUPA toting white woman cannot relate to her.

Whitmer is culturally more relatable to this set than HRc.

Whitmer would be culturally more relatable than Gina Raimondo for example as well because of Gina’s educational background

Whitmer was a member of Michigan House of Rep and then Michigan State Senate for many years. She was the Michigan Senate’s first female Democratic leader. She went to Michigan State for her law degree. No one cares she didn’t go to Wellesley or Yale. Most people in this country go to their state school now that college cost is out of control. Obama had about the same amount of experience or less than Whitmer. He was a one time Senator where as Whitmer is a Governor. She has been dealing with the issues that matter for this country.

Gina raimondo has been 10x the governor that whitmer is, is smarter, works out more, just overall outshines Whitmer on every dimension.

So explain why whitmer is top tier and raimondo isnt?

The Misogynistic pig is back.

Have some standards - being a Rhodes scholar and being fit should be lauded.

Are we republicans?

So that means you don't like Harris due to her lack of a top-tier education, right?

Howard is great — I do question what happened for law school though given her parent’s elite credentials.

I wouldnt hold whitmer’s TTT status if she grew up poor or LMC. She grew up pretty privileged!

Few points at a few PPs.

Michigan Legislature is a backwater joke. And Whitmer accomplished nothing there to write home about.

Whitmer is a sorority girl at heart, she was literally her chapter President. Which isn’t disparaging, it helps her. State school Greek life is parties and socializing ... you develop the gift of gab.

Harris obviously isn’t book smart. Howard isn’t anything special. Hastings even less so. Vis a vis her sibling, come on, there’s no way to spin her marks and test scores had to have been God awful.

They include sleeping with a married man twice her age who appointed her to her political appointments that paid her $400k. Failing to prosecute certain banks and individuals for mortgage fraud. She also ignored the pleas of the people to investigate and prosecute the police for suspicious deaths of young black men. Nor did she support laws eventually put into place by Governor Brown to help end racial profiling of the police in California. She went on record objecting to a law proposing all police where body cameras. She also opposed legislation requiring the AG’s office to independently investigate deadly police shootings. You will also be hearing the name Kevin Cooper if she is the VP (look up that tragic story) and her record on prosecuting Black men, opposing the legalization of marijuana, and the list goes on.

So this is the stuff that gives me such reservation around her politically. It just seems like a very slipppery slope with her. The timing for her interest is all wrong, because she doesn’t have any recent meaningful action that contradicts her historic action. And current public persona.

Add that in with the very obvious oppo dumps when we have been strengthened in a unified campaign otherwise — it just stinks to me. Stinks.

+1 The Biden team knows all this, trust. I think the Dodd comments were deliberately leaked to prepare the public for her not being the pick.

I think that was just Dodd talking to a donor who talked to the press. But interesting point.

The Axelrod comments are telling. If Sen. Harris or her operatives dumped opposition research in the press, then that could be a trust issue with Biden. The delay is also very bad for Harris as the perceived front runner. If she has not closed the deal by now, she may never. Biden is clearly looking for alternatives. Rice may be moving higher up into contention but Biden has not made up his mind.

I tend to think the Whitmer leak is a smoke screen. It could be a way to prepare the public for a surprise.

Since pundits insisted the pick would be a Black woman, I think it’s important to prepare the public in the event it might not be. I would have been shocked by a Whitmer announcement without this trial balloon. It gave me time to process why she might make sense as the pick even though I wanted a Black woman (not Harris though, that oppo dump stuff is appalling).

A few points for PP.

You are an elitist and misogynist. It is likely that you have accomplished nothing in your life to write home about - you seem to have a lot of extra time to foam at the...mouth about Whitmer.
Whitmer was the opposition leader of the Michigan senate, one of the largest states in the Union - she accomplished as much as she could in the opposition - standing up to woman-haters like yourself. Here's a moment of substance you will never have: https://www.facebook.com/GovGretchenWhitmer/videos/senator-gretchen-whitmer-no-vote-rape-insurance-bill/2168154589865163/ )8 minute mark).

You obviously love to talk about who is book smart and who isn't (but your grammar suggests you yourself do not read much). It is a safe bet that Harris and Whitmer are smarter and better human beings than you are capable of comprehending from the schema of your deep bias. Many smart and talented people come out of public universities. When they are men, nobody cares. Women are, yet again, held to a higher standard.

Howard = good school
Hasting = excellent law school

PPP has no idea what they are talking about.

Why did you want a black woman? Isn’t that the very definition of racism? Picking someone strictly on skin color?
100% serious question, why is it ok to want a black person just because they’re black?

Black voters handed Joe the nomination and in return asked for a seat at the table. I respect that and think it’s fair. Besides Rice and Bass are the most qualified governing picks in the mix other than maybe Warren. Representation helps mend systemic racism and it’s quite racist of you to suggest this doesn’t matter in light of all the injustices suffered by the Black community.

The ONLY reason Harris is in contention is because she has Big Tech oligarchs pushing her. She brings NOTHING to the table. Not even more Black votes. She’s unlikable opportunist with baggage who quite literally slept her way into politics. Didn’t she also lie about what songs she listened to in college, trying to say she was listening to 2 Pac... 10 years before 2 Pac was rapping. Lol.
