I don't get involved in my colleagues' parenting styles. Work is work.

I find it hard to believe this is real.

Say whatever you want about Rush Limbaugh or Cliven Bundy or Timothy McVeigh or whoever but don't even think about saying something revolving around white people - they pitch a fit.
"My family didn't own slaves I was an immigrant my husband is black I voted for Obama!"
Whites go on the defensive immediately when they sense they are being lumped into one homogeneous category. The irony of that is white people don't hesitate to lump other ethnicities into one group and rob other ethnicities of their individuality. WTF? Way I figure if you got a problem with people saying all whites are racist child molesting pill popping serial killers then don't say all blacks are X or all Hispanics are Y or Asians are Z. If you can't take stereotypical depictions then stop dishing them out.

While I don't agree with gross generalizations, this isn't a good argument.

People stereotype black males as being dangerous that's true. The sad part about this is that 1 our of 3 black men will spend time in prison in their lifetimes. In DC, I believe it's over 50%. A lot of people take this as proof that the system is biased against blacks, but when the FBI does their crime victimization survey every year, the proportion of blacks who are reported committing crimes matches very closely with the numbers being prosecuted and convicted. While this doesn't say that there isn't some unfairness in the system, it does strongly suggest that the percentages getting convicted are proportional to the people committing the crimes. The proportion of "white child molesting, pill popping, serial killers" is absolutely miniscule in comparison, which is why it's not a fair comparison. When a significant proportion of the white male population are serial killers or child molesters we can talk.
Yes, but as I recall drug use is pretty similar between blacks and white but blacks are arrested in far higher proportions than whites are.

We will deal with "fixing" the situation later -- he just needs to make it out of the situation alive.

Why do so many AA young men have the view that they can and should stand up to the cops? Sure Michael Brown wasn't armed, but many black men of that age group are -- why would any cop give him the benefit of the doubt?? If they told him to get on the sidewalk -- why not get on the damn sidewalk? And why not teach AA boys to dress a bit more respectably instead of embracing the thus culture? I'm guessing someone walking around in jeans with a sports coat is a bit less likely to be harassed than someone in a hoodie.

I am sure DCUM will jump all over me, but I am genuinely curious. I am of a different profiled class and you better believe that at the airport and in gov't buildings -- I am on my best behavior; always carrying ID, polite even if I have to go through another damn security check for no reason, dressed professionally etc. I know my profiled class has created issues for the world -- I don't want to give anyone a reason to have an issue with me. Seems like AAs don't think that way.

I think African immigrants would be more likely to want to distinguish themselves from the stereotypical black person thug image.

We are from Nigeria and would be very upset if our daughter dated or married the typical American black. We want more for our kids. Many african immigrants would agree. I won't even consider living in an American black community.

I alsn consider an African American someone who actually recently immigrated African. There are really no similarities, even features and skin tone is very different. American blacks have a very uniquely American appearance (and values). In my culture, Nigeria, focusing on your studied is expected. Getting a good job is expected.

Thank you for writing this.

This is exactly what students have told me when I've questioned why the cafeteria is so segregated. I have a good friend from Uganda who's now a doctor; he shares the same sentiment. .

So the "black community" clearly is NOT monolithic. And neither is the "white community." for that matter. As someone who's first generation, I have values from two different communities" and close ties to another country.

Most immigrants, regardless of race, feel superior to their American counterparts. Nothing new

+1

I'm biracial. My father is Nigerian. I too will not want my daughter to marry an American black male. I find American black men crass, abusive, and disrespectful. They don't even know how to treat a woman. That's why when I see them I go the opposite way. They don't have a great record as being good providers, fathers, or husbands. If more American black men were like Neil Degrasse Tyson or Dr. Ben Carson, then I would like them.

Nigerian poster, are you planning on taking your family back to Nigeria or sending your kids to live with relatives when they are teens? I know other African immigrants who plan to do this because they want their kids to know their African roots and have similar values and not become too immersed in American culture and our values.

Pp here. Yep, we live in a low-income black neighborhood but my white kid suffered far more at the hands of the rich, white kids at her private school and at BCC.

Yes. It wasn't something that happened at BCC but it was kids who went to BCC who were drug addicts and users. But those kids don't end up under arrest or in jail. And if they do get arrested, mom and dad get them a good lawyer. It's a different story for kids in Southeast.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I've heard about the drug problems at BCC. I didn't know that things were that bad. That's great that your daughter is in a much happier place now. Unfortunately, rich people in this country get away with more crime than poor people because they can afford great lawyers.
