No reason to wait until then. Then next scheduled make-up day is Jan 29. The one after that is March 31.

We should enact the 29th day so March 31 is available for the next snow.

Those are days for end of term grading.

DP. So? If they are listed as make-up days it is ok to use them. If teachers don’t want to list that, they should work with their union to have more snow days added into the calendar.

Clearly not a teacher.

The end of the term is often when the workload is the heaviest. It’s important to actually give teachers time during the work day to process grades.

Teachers are tired of the expectation that our nights and weekends belong to our job. Schools cannot function on teachers’ willingness to be martyrs.

Then why didn't you complain when it was identified a make-up day. Your union apparently thought it was an acceptable option then.

For maximum opportunities to whine and complain

This gets old.

Which is it? Should I advocate for teachers or not? I was told I should fight for additional grading days, but the mere mention of grading on DCUM is met with disdain.

See, commenting on teacher workload here IS a way to advocate for teachers. Perhaps some posters on this thread need to hear what the job is like so they can stop dismissing it so easily.

Of course teaching is a tough job. I am glad our teachers' salaries are in line with the median earnings for workers with advanced degrees in Montgomery County, and that is in addition to their benefits package, which is far more generous than that for many other workers, including county employees.

But a lot of the complaining is not always based on reality. Many posters on DCUM seem to think teachers are the only workers with masters degrees not raking in $200k. They complain about the pension. Well, if we took that away and offered health insurance that is comparable to plans offered in the private sector, the salaries could be significantly higher (think like $20k more).

The situation with makeup days being set up on days teachers think is horribly unfair to have to do them, is very problematic. That's not the parents' fault. MCPS has a legal obligation to provide a certain number of days of instruction. In recent history, they have shown their determination to provide the absolute bare minimum. Well this is the consequence of that and it has nothing to do with parents.

Those aren't mutually exclusive. You should openly and legally advocate for your own equities. But understand that others might find some of your demands unreasonable.

Yes, certainly where I am.

Has it been snowing anywhere on MoCo? We haven't had accumulation for the last 8 hours or so.

I hope they will add make-up days before then. HS kids could use the time for their AP classes.

The earlier makeup days are 1/29 and 3/31.

1/29 is too early to be used as a makeup days. 3/31 is Eid al-Fitr. Let’s not take away the Muslim holiday again.

Some of you are unhinged. Nothing is being learned in school on makeup days. Half the kids don’t even come to school. The 180 day rule is stupid. So what if the school year becomes less. Advocate for quality rather than quantity

It was snowing until about an hour ago where I am.

There are 6 inches here with another 1 expected. Not a bust in my opinion.

Looks like there's going to be a pause in snow this afternoon, then more this evening.

Would be a great time for building staff to get started, but unfortunately I don't think enough roads are clear enough for them to be called in. Please let us know if you see anyone at any schools near you today though!

Building staff was clearing sidewalks at my kids school when we were there sledding at 10am, but we're in Silver Spring so I'm guessing the roads are pretty clear.

If they reduce it to 170..people will still keep their kids out at the end of the year, before vacations, some Fridays etc.

1/29 is plenty far away. The Board could approve it this week.

Says someone whose kids obviously doesn't get special education services or subsidized food at school.

Quantity matters too.

Five or six inches here in Germantown. It's slowing down but I think it's due to start up again in a few hours with another inch expected.

We already did. The time to complain about making 3/31 a make-up day was when we made the calendar. It is ridiculous to rehash the same argument that was already made and rejected through an open, democratic process.

The crazies like this in MoCo are exactly why this be automatic once we go over the built-in extra days.
