MCPS closing/delaying on Monday?

I hope they will add make-up days before then. HS kids could use the time for their AP classes.

No reason to wait until then. Then next scheduled make-up day is Jan 29. The one after that is March 31.

We should enact the 29th day so March 31 is available for the next snow.

Those are days for end of term grading.

DP. So? If they are listed as make-up days it is ok to use them. If teachers don’t want to list that, they should work with their union to have more snow days added into the calendar.

If kids can't go to school with any icy/snowy sidewalks, but also not in the summer because of poor AC, would there have to be makeup days over spring break? There are only so many ways to fit in 180 days. Gotta pick your poison- although I must say I've never lived somewhere so.....delicate.

Last year they did some kind of work at home make up day where my kindergartener came home with a packet.

They're not allowed to do that anymore. The previous allowance for that wasn't intended to cover normal/expected snow events like that (or this). Districts are expected to have real make-up days for forseeable weather events.

Oh no that sucks.

Then 2 snow days doesn’t seem realistic

Why? As you almost certainly saw last year, that make-up day was a joke. MCPS should have implemented one of the reserved make-up days. There were two very good options but MCEA fought efforts to use them.

I think once people are expecting to have the day off it’s unfortunate when it needs to be taken away. Yes I understand they are labeled as make up days. As I said I think more snow days should be built in, but I know nothing is going to please everyone.

Which is why we really need to make this an automatic process. If a school closure requires a make-up day, the next available day 3 weeks or more out should be an automatically selected without BoE action.

That is a great idea.

State regs don't allow waivers in those situations now. The waiver process was abused.

They're going to have to add days. Contact the BoE reps and tell them to use the 29th.

You all are doing too much. We haven’t even exhausted our built-in days yet, and you are requesting them to open for makeup day on the 29th. This thread has gone delusional!

Clearly not a teacher.

The end of the term is often when the workload is the heaviest. It’s important to actually give teachers time during the work day to process grades.

Teachers are tired of the expectation that our nights and weekends belong to our job. Schools cannot function on teachers’ willingness to be martyrs.

We'll likely find out tomorrow that this is an issue. Most people here seem to agree it is unlikely that MCPS will open on Wednesday. It is entirely appropriate to begin discussing how we're going to deal with that.

Then why didn't you complain when it was identified a make-up day. Your union apparently thought it was an acceptable option then.

Probably because I’m too busy working to put up much of a fight. Plus, I’ve learned teachers actually have very little voice.

Individual teachers, yes. But not MCEA. Elect better union reps.

This gets old.

Which is it? Should I advocate for teachers or not? I was told I should fight for additional grading days, but the mere mention of grading on DCUM is met with disdain.

See, commenting on teacher workload here IS a way to advocate for teachers. Perhaps some posters on this thread need to hear what the job is like so they can stop dismissing it so easily.

Where would you recommend putting that day?
