Until you just said it, I hadn't realized it. But I do see this a fair amount. Cars with FLA plates in the DMV.

A lot of military personnel are stationed in Florida at some point and it is quite common to switch their home of record to Florida to avoid state income taxes for the rest of their careers. That accounts for a lot of the Florida car tags in the DC area, especially in Virginia. They also vote absentee in Florida.

Most states don’t tax military pay anyway.

In general, no way we are moving to Florida for retirement. I know military who keep their residence and cars registered there for tax purposes.

*Used* to be cheap. Turns out it’s gotten pretty unaffordable in the only parts worth living in. But if you can afford the homeowners, there are some deals to be had living among the gators and methheads!
