Because people have an idealized of "beach life" that is not really true. I won't go into all of the reasons why that is (they are well covered) but it has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with the belief you'll be watching Manatees from the beach while sipping a Marg in the sun all day. . . . So, let's be honest about that.

But think of all the people driving around the dmv with their Florida plates. Those people count as living in Florida, right? Even though they clearly don’t. So how many people are domiciled in Florida for tax purposes, but don’t actually have to deal with the negative consequences of desantis’ idiocy?

Until you just said it, I hadn't realized it. But I do see this a fair amount. Cars with FLA plates in the DMV.

A lot of military personnel are stationed in Florida at some point and it is quite common to switch their home of record to Florida to avoid state income taxes for the rest of their careers. That accounts for a lot of the Florida car tags in the DC area, especially in Virginia. They also vote absentee in Florida.

FS do this, too!

So they cheat on their taxes just like Trump.

One of many valuable perks they get.

It should not be allowed, but it is. They use it to save on car insurance also.

Adding to that, insurance is significantly more expensive than in other states, and the recent tort reforms intended to make Florida friendlier to insurers hasn't really been tested. So I would speculate that lower-income professional jobs like professor might be dissuaded from putting down roots in an area they can barely afford. The politics is probably also a factor for many professors, but I doubt it's the whole story.

Even noted DeSantis fan Rupert Murdoch’s Wall Street Journal is hammering the homeowners insurance problem in Florida.

Desantis is an even worse presidential candidate than Trump or Biden.

God grief, selfstorage.com is your source?!? You make me wish there was an intelligence test for voting. You do realize that many people do not use self storage, correct?

I would prefer to trust Forbes, the survey was updated September 2023.

There are insurance problems all over. We own a vacation home in New Orleans. We pay 12K a year for a house worth $450K in a non flood zone. A friend who purchased a $500K home there and was quoted 20K a year because it’s in a flood zone. The median income of NO is $50K so the housing market is completely unaffordable to full time residents because of these wild insurance premiums. Many insurance companies have left the state and the situation is exactly the same as in FL but you don’t hear about it. In California it’s difficult to get car insurance and many insurers have left including big ones like Geico because the state won’t let them raise rates and they have a low mandatory insurance threshold. There is also a 14-30 day review period before a policy will be written. Unlike most other states you can’t just hop online and buy a policy the same day.

.
In Florida everyone uses self storage because there are no basements and attics are unusable. Just an FYI since you are so intelligent.

The Forbes article wasn't any better. The Forbes article states they earn a commission from partner links on Forbes Home. I doubt it's a credible source.

Florida is an awful place for employees. Unemployment is only $275 a week for 12 weeks. There is so much corruption. It's such a fake job market. There are numerous recruiters and temp agencies. The government contractors like Lockheed Martin mostly employ UCF grads.

According to US Census data, almost half a million people left Florida for other Southern states. Florida is becoming unaffordable for most people who try to live there and earn a living.

I have several friends who have moved to my neighborhood from FL. It wasn't because of affordability. It was because of the heat - particularly the summers. The summers is southern FL are unbearable for many compared to GA or TN.

And, there was this from the article you linked:
"Despite losing nearly 500,000 people last year, Florida still experience net positive migration, the Census found. The state gained about 740,000 residents from out of state in 2022."

South Florida has become like Los Angeles in regards to cost of living. Everyone from NY ran there during the pandemic raising home prices enormously. My aunts $475K home purchased in 2017 was sold for 1.1 million in 2021. Those price increases are not sustainable.

That’s surprising to hear if they came from South Florida which usually has a nice coastal breeze that helps with the heat. I’ve found summers in Georgia to be far worse and I’ve lived in both places.
