Clinches MI and PA and maybe helps elsewhere in other parts of flyover country, Biden’s “gaffe” perhaps suggests he may think African Americans will support him 96-4 in any and all events. Harris becomes AG and S.Rice becomes sec. of state. Maybe the thought is that the vaguely racist male swing voters would be turned off by a woman of color VP. That’s the post, folks.

Really? Why couldn't white women see themselves in Hilary Clinton? I mean what does whitmer have Hilary didnt have ? Are you actually serious with this argument ? It has a weird combination of being pathetic and unbelievably dumb.

And uber-sexist.

Aget, it’s Joe who said it had to be a woman. Is that sexist?

Funny to see the Klobuchar fan club back in force. Shocker that her sensible approach would appeal to sensible neoliberals in the DMV. Not happening.

Depressing.

Terribly upset by the white women who overwhelmingly gave us Trump, and now Whitmer. They are as racist and sexist as the white men. Period.

Biden would be the one giving us Whitmer. It his decision and no one else's.

Control of the Senate is important. Rice already withdrew when she was in contention for Sec. of State once before because she could not get confirmed. It might not be much different this time. Harris also might not want to subject herself to the rigorous vetting for AG. Her prosecutorial record will be subject to intense scrutiny, way more than just a few unflattering articles during a presidential campaign. Everything will be viewed with the benefit of 20-20 hindsight.

This. We need a senate that won’t stall on relief if Americans need it. Maybe you don’t want to play ball with the other side, but until they are voted out, or exposed for fraudulent election, those are the rules. Don’t want 4 years of continuing resolutions, government shutdowns, and bickering. along those lines, this is one of the reasons I was very excited for the possibility of Bass. Her low key gift of repair and negotiation across the aisle and willingness to allow younger candidates more time to prove themselves to Americans for a more informed and less emotional vote in 2024.

I would be very happy with Bass but only if she can figure out how to effectively push back against the radical leftist tag. The oppo dump on her was brutal. It's telling to me how many of her colleagues in congress and the DNC prefer her. She is a low-key effective workhorse, with bipartisan respect, and doesn't make choices out of seeking the spotlight. She might be a little low key for a campaign but is very likable and would best guarantee Black turnout since her entire adult life has been dedicated to their concerns. But, as with Rice, I'm concerned about her baggage and appeal to swing voters.

Her mean streak doesn't fit with Joe's brand. I'm not sure she even passed preliminary vetting given the timing of her dropping out. Her record on race relations is bad, would have been a non-starter. Whitmer seems to be doing well with the Black community in MI, chose a Black Lt-Gov, and has passed two executive orders addressing racial disparities and bias. And has governing and economic chops Amy lacks. She won't be back, at least not this time.

I think that Whitmer declared racism to be a public health emergency in her state. That’s constructive. She has al also been one of America’s best advocates for masking. What’s not to like?

Can you bet on this? I'd like to place a long shot bet on Michelle Obama. I'm assuming she's at 100+ to 1 odds or something like that?
Anonymous
This bookie site says Michelle Obama is 4th place in the odds at +1600. Does that mean for every $100 you bet you'd win $1600? So a $20 bet would win $320?

Kamala Harris -110
Susan Rice +200
Gretchen Whitmer +550
Michelle Obama +1600

Interesting. From a WaPo article today:

"He initially promised to make his decision by Aug. 1, then pushed it back. While he has been expected to make his announcement a few days before the Aug. 17 start of the Democratic convention, two people familiar with the process said that one-on-one interviews had not been scheduled with some of the top contenders as of midweek, although Biden met with Whitmer last weekend. Both spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations."

I think they're usually scheduled last-minute, but I wonder if he didn't narrow it down more than we thought and eliminate some of the "top contenders" already.

I'm coming more and more to think you may be right. I wonder if they are begging behind closed doors--and that is the delay? Imagine the excitement that would give to the ballot.

Of course, this scares me more than anything, because I am a Trump supporter. They will try to imply that we are getting Barack along with Michelle. Of course, that has its downside---"sexism."

+200

I'd vote for a Biden/House Centipede ticket if that's what it came to. I loathe the creepy, disgusting, leggy, freakishly fast critters with a passion, but it's still a far, far better ticket than Trump/Pence/whomever.

Well the convention starts in a week so I think he knows by now. Kudos to his team for keeping this quiet. I'm amazed by how few leaks there have been. Announcement tomorrow?

Hrc is a Wellesley YLS grad - the average FUPA toting white woman cannot relate to her.

Whitmer is culturally more relatable to this set than HRc.

Whitmer would be culturally more relatable than Gina Raimondo for example as well because of Gina’s educational background

Whitmer was a member of Michigan House of Rep and then Michigan State Senate for many years. She was the Michigan Senate’s first female Democratic leader. She went to Michigan State for her law degree. No one cares she didn’t go to Wellesley or Yale. Most people in this country go to their state school now that college cost is out of control. Obama had about the same amount of experience or less than Whitmer. He was a one time Senator where as Whitmer is a Governor. She has been dealing with the issues that matter for this country.

Gina raimondo has been 10x the governor that whitmer is, is smarter, works out more, just overall outshines Whitmer on every dimension.

So explain why whitmer is top tier and raimondo isnt?

The Misogynistic pig is back.

Have some standards - being a Rhodes scholar and being fit should be lauded.

Are we republicans?

Da da, Boris-bot.

Looks like none of the prospects are on the Sunday talk shows today and most have gone quiet on social media the past several days (except Harris?). Maybe they were told to go to ground?

I think his own personal first choice would be Rice - they know each other really well from the Obama admin, and all the articles about his VP search say he wants a partner and someone he already knows and trusts. But, she does carry a lot of Obama administration baggage and I’m sure Republicans would love to throw out the “Clinton Obama Benghazi emails rarrrrrr” red meat to the base.

Demmings may be a gimmick to you - for me, as a public interest lobbyist, I have been nothing but impressed by her. Wish even 50% of Dem caucus was as well-prepared as she is for hearings and floor time. She is fluent with the materials and subject matter, clearly reading memos and listening to her staff (who also appear top notch). Perhaps the law enforcement background was seen as a detraction - that said, really like her and hope she has a long future in national Dem politics.

I don't think she's a gimmick, clear she's smart and talented. Just not very experienced yet.

She is smart, talented and a solid Representative. But, as a VP candidate in 2020 her appeal is gimmicky. Rightly or wrongly her appeal never passed the "former police chief" phase.
