And social media will break your bones. |
Naw apparently some of you teach your kids it’s okay to say the N word because it’s somehow not racist |
I'm pretty sure Jews don't go around openly and pervasively using anti Semitic slurs. I think it's too hard to judge the use of the N word by teens as racist vs. overfamiliarity with the word's usage in nonracist ways. My DC has friends of all races who sing the N word in rap songs and hear their black friends use it constantly. A 15 year old could easily make the wrong choice, even if not racist. As a black person, and of course many blacks will disagree with me, I don't think anyone should use that word, but it's pervasive use in black culture has to some extent normalized its usage. At 15 kids miss a lot of nuances and make stupid decisions. Maybe this girl had a history that encouraged the student who sent the video to send it, but if it's just the video, I would be more likely to put the person on probation than to rescind the offers. I did stupid stuff at 15 and I'm sure my kids will also. Perspective is important. The leeway you give a 15 year old should be moor than you give a 21 year old. |
The girl was not singing along to a song in the video. She was alone in her car and posted herself saying it in a stand-alone sentence. So the “kids sing it in rap” excuse doesn’t carry water here. |
DP. So when black people use it, it has to also be a slur, and as a black person who opposes the use of the word I should be able to demand consequences against blacks who use it? If there is NO other way to use it, then I'd say yes. She was 15 and possibly was stupid enough to think there was a nonracist way of using the word. Do you not recall being 15 and immature? |
Apparently POC actually think that wealthy white people in northern Virginia are teaching their children to use the n-word. I have had the n-word discussion with my children but will definitely have to have more talks about social media and avoiding angry men like the one in the article. His YouTube video harassing the girl and threatening to "expose" her for calling him dumb seems a little incel. Does he target girls that don't want to go to prom or something? |
I mentioned singing rap and common usage by black friends. That can normalize the usage of the word in the mind of a 15 year old. I'm all for giving young teens leeway to grow and learn from their mistakes. Should all colleges now refuse to accept her and should all employers refuse to hire her? Perspective, people. |
Both of the young people in this story are 18. But you label one a man, and one a girl. This, of course, is part and parcel of a narrative in which Black boys are vilifiied and assumed to be much older than they actually are. This also feeds into the white girl as victim mentality - the very same narrative that got Emmett Till murderered. |
I wasn't aware Emmett Till went around town gloating about ruining a 15 year old girl's life. |
Again. These two young people are the same age. Both are recent HS graduates, already in college. |
No it’s never ok. This girl was stupid and racist in 9th grade and and should have had serious consequences then. maybe she still is racist and stupid! but do you seriously want to kick all the boys, black and white, who have ever uttered the word f@ggot or made sexist, misogynist remarks in 9th grade out of college? |
He looks like he might be half white. Does he have a white parent? If so is he allowed to use the N word? How much white in you does it become off limits? |
They are the same age, why is he a "man" while she is a "girl"? And equating not going to prom with someone with the use of a word he views as a racial slur speaks volumes about you, not him. If he had said misogynistic things and she called him out, would she be an "angry woman" targeting a poor boy? Or would she be a poor girl defending herself from a misogynistic angry man? I'm guessing, based on your post, the latter. |
Because she made that video at age 15 (girl) while he waited until age 18 (man) to release it. |
