Sincere question from a vaxxed Trump hater: what are you all getting out of this string of posts about people dying?
Is it glee? Is it gloating? What is it helping? Maybe if there was a sense of hope that maybe some high profile deaths will finally change people's minds I would get it. But the vibe I get from this thread is inhumane. |
It’s poetic justice - for the lies, the gaslighting, the antisocial ideology of conservatives. Shame is a powerful tool for nudging societal outcomes. |
But the thing is, the people who are dying are the ones who believed the lies and were gaslit. Who do you think the real perpetrator is? Who do you think is feeling “shame” from these posts and therefore being motivated to change their ideology? I AM a liberal and I certainly hope this thread is not a good representation of who we are… |
Their families are. Because the world and their local community knows that they were wrong to espouse illogical views. Plus doctors are saying that families and friends who witnessed their last days are now hurrying to get vaccinated. |
Do you actually know any people who have gone down the maga wormhole? I do, many. Some of them were good people, years ago. They have not been gaslit, they have chosen hate, blame, to put their feelings above everyone else’s. They have made this decision consciously, over and over and over. They have felt a soothing surge of adrenaline - and yes, to get that little boost does soothe people after a time, like a drug - when they’ve listened to their favorite talking head mock a woman or a minority or Chelsea Clinton or whoever. Do not deny them agency. It’s not like their friends and family haven’t tried to put evidence, reality, the truth in front of them, and they have smacked it down. I don’t know if this story is accurate; she says to DM her for proof. If true, this is the endpoint of choosing to consume propaganda. https://www.reddit.com/user/throwaway096283/ Do not waste your time defending people who have made their own decisions; they are putting every American back in harm’s way, but especially our children and those who are unable to get the shot. |
+1. It gives them this sense of righteousness. Like they are part of the popular crowd now. They’re in on the secret. But it’s kinda like they all bought into the same MLM scam. |
What I’m getting is a place to vent my frustration and a place where what’s clearly happening, is clearly talked about. |
Shoe fits |
Couple things: 1. What you describe is certainly true of some people. It is not true of all people who support Trump or are choosing not to get vaxxed. (And BTW, I do not understand why these two things are collapsed into one). Many of these people live deep in a environment and media bubble, and were raised there. The focus should be on breaking through that bubble, and it isn't going to happen with hate. 2. I am not denying them agency, I am recognizing that their circumstances (ranging from their geographic area to their intelligence level) are different. 3. Even if absolutely everything you say is true about everyone of them, a thread gloating about their deaths is barbaric. |
Again. Do you know any of these people personally. I do. You are denying them agency for their decisions. It’s not like the internet doesn’t exist, it’s not like they can’t access different tv channels. It’s not as if they can’t travel at least once in a while. It’s not 1840 on the prairie and all they can get is a yellow journalism rag. They make the decision to keep hitting the propaganda pipe because it feels good. They do that. They choose to mock and denigrate people from the liberal side of the aisle. |
Let me try it this way: Can you define "these people"? And why are you certain your experience with a few translates to ALL of "them"? And there is a difference between holding them accountable for "their" decisions and being gleeful about "their" death? |
Spouse told me about a study of people who won’t get vaccinated. None of them asked their doctor about the vaccines. They chose to believe random websites over their own doctor. |
I am willing to bet they have never had a conversation with their doctor. I am of the opinion that the only good thing that comes from these deaths is that it might motivate others to get vaccinated. I think these deaths should be broadcast and discussed for that reason if nothing else. I know there is some dark humor to be had as well, but I think we can all agree that motivating others to get the vaccine in any way is good thing. |
The people pointed out in this thread were not people who merely were misled and died tragically. This thread is about people who were self-righteous assholes against vaccines, masks, and reasonable public health measures and accommodations. Most if them were mean and angry and obnoxious about it and put themselves and many others at risk because of their indignant ignorance. |
The thread subject rather defines “they,” doesn’t it? Republicans who think covid is a hoax, overblown, not a real problem, “just the flu.” Why am I sure? Probably because the people I know are across the country in different social stratum and because everything I’ve read confirms it. Why do you doubt me? Do you think I’m not sad that my friends and family have chosen to go down the path of darkness? That they, almost uniformly identifying as “Christian” have decided to dance to the devil’s tune? Do you think I have glee that I’m right and you’re wrong? Hell no. This thread records public or publicized Republicans who have fugged around and found out that covid is no joke. You feel pity for them. They’re human. Even though at this point they are doing it to themselves, I still have a glimmer of sadness for them. What I DO NOT have is any sympathy for these people because through their own decisions, they are going to kill children and those who cannot get vaccinated. My empathy for a person runs out when they show themselves to banally cruel. Are they any less responsible for the deaths they’ve caused if they don’t learn of their victims? No. They know what they’re doing. And they have decided that other people’s children aren’t worth the tiny effort to get the vaccine. |
