Maybe if there was a sense of hope that maybe some high profile deaths will finally change people's minds I would get it.

But the vibe I get from this thread is inhumane.

It’s poetic justice - for the lies, the gaslighting, the antisocial ideology of conservatives.

Shame is a powerful tool for nudging societal outcomes.

But the thing is, the people who are dying are the ones who believed the lies and were gaslit. Who do you think the real perpetrator is? Who do you think is feeling “shame” from these posts and therefore being motivated to change their ideology? I AM a liberal and I certainly hope this thread is not a good representation of who we are…

Do you actually know any people who have gone down the maga wormhole? I do, many. Some of them were good people, years ago. They have not been gaslit, they have chosen hate, blame, to put their feelings above everyone else’s. They have made this decision consciously, over and over and over. They have felt a soothing surge of adrenaline - and yes, to get that little boost does soothe people after a time, like a drug - when they’ve listened to their favorite talking head mock a woman or a minority or Chelsea Clinton or whoever.

Do not deny them agency. It’s not like their friends and family haven’t tried to put evidence, reality, the truth in front of them, and they have smacked it down. I don’t know if this story is accurate; she says to DM her for proof. If true, this is the endpoint of choosing to consume propaganda. https://www.reddit.com/user/throwaway096283/ Do not waste your time defending people who have made their own decisions; they are putting every American back in harm’s way, but especially our children and those who are unable to get the shot.

Couple things:

1. What you describe is certainly true of some people. It is not true of all people who support Trump or are choosing not to get vaxxed. (And BTW, I do not understand why these two things are collapsed into one). Many of these people live deep in a environment and media bubble, and were raised there. The focus should be on breaking through that bubble, and it isn't going to happen with hate.

2. I am not denying them agency, I am recognizing that their circumstances (ranging from their geographic area to their intelligence level) are different.

3. Even if absolutely everything you say is true about everyone of them, a thread gloating about their deaths is barbaric.

Again. Do you know any of these people personally. I do. You are denying them agency for their decisions. It’s not like the internet doesn’t exist, it’s not like they can’t access different tv channels. It’s not as if they can’t travel at least once in a while. It’s not 1840 on the prairie and all they can get is a yellow journalism rag.

They make the decision to keep hitting the propaganda pipe because it feels good. They do that. They choose to mock and denigrate people from the liberal side of the aisle.

NP. Love this. It’s so true with the ones I know. They also get a rush with baiting people. They are now surpassing vegans and vapers in always managing to bring up their views in ANY unrelated conversation because they love the feeling. They are not terrible people but they are ACTING like terrible people.

You can't fix stubborn + stupid. It's a killer combination:

This week, the state's health department reported the highest number of COVID-19 hospitalizations since late February. Scott Roe is one of them.

"Here I am recovering, getting out of here finally tomorrow. Am I going to get a vaccine? No," Roe said. "Because there's too many issues with these vaccines."

This father, former baseball coach, small business owner and hunter caught COVID and then developed pneumonia.

"Before you got sick," Begnaud asked Roe, "if you would have had a chance to get the vaccine and prevent this, would you have taken the vaccine?"

"No," Roe said. "I would have gone through this, yes sir… Don't shove it down my throat. That's what local, state, federal administration is trying to do - shove it down your throat."

"What are they shoving," Begnaud asked, "the science?"

"No they're shoving the fact that that's their agenda," Roe said, "their agenda is to get you vaccinated."

"You know who Mr. Scalise is?" Begnaud asked Roe.

"I know who Steve Scalise is very well," Roe said.

Roe, who is a Republican, had not heard that Congressman Scalise had stepped into the forefront Tuesday as a vaccine proponent. Begnaud asked him to read the congressman's statement.

"He thinks it's safe and effective," Roe said.

"And what's your reaction?" Begnaud asked.

"Not proven," Roe said.

"But does his opinion change yours?" Begnaud asked.

"No, it does not," Roe said.

So - what is motivating the turn around by some gop politicians and talking heads? Are they afraid their death cult is only killing republicans voters? The people dying of the delta variant are by and large those who have not been vaccinated and those people are highly likely to be Republicans. What happens when the Venn diagram of who dies from covid and republican voters becomes a very tight circle? Will science be back in with the gop?
Or has tooo much damage been done? How many health officials have quit their jobs because of crazy maga death threats? How much damage has maga/anti-vax/anti-science cult wrought? And who if anyone will experience consequences. I really hope someone successfully Sues
Those who have monetized anti-vax crazy. Don’t know if there is a possible tort claim but god willing those who
Monetized the hate & stupidty will pay some price for it.

It's spurred by two things: (1) breakthrough cases in which a more contagious version of the virus is sickening those already vaccinated....which indicates that those who are unvaccinated will fare even worse and (2) the financial market jitters.

The time to f#ck around is over. Delta is going to sweep this country with a ferocity.

Thank you. I’m the PP you’re replying to and some of the people I’m talking about were very good people. Giving, loving, maybe a bit rigid in some of their beliefs (but how many of us are or have been?). Now (and by “now” I’m including the McConnell years, so prepandemic) they delight and harassing people, specifically their loved ones and friends who they know disagree. Mocking them. Literally leading a room in mean spirited “teasing.”

I remember when these people were nice people. I wish they’d go back to that; it is as if they have some sort of brain wasting disease.

This turd's first excuse for not getting vaccinated is that "there are too many issues with it" but he gives away the game when he admits it's about the government shoving things down his throat. Wasting hospital resources. And he better pay EVERY SINGLE PENNY of his bill.

Honestly they should not give people that foolish any air time.

When they do survive, they don’t give credit ton all the medical staff and treatment, it was due to their prayer circle.

Their neighbors called covid-19 a hoax. Can these ICU nurses forgive them?
https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2021/07/06/appalachian-covid-deniers-nurses-virginia/?no_nav=true
“After Goff’s mother developed a high fever, she was taken by ambulance to Johnston Memorial, and a week later she was intubated. Goff was furious, claiming that doctors had not adequately informed her family about the severity of her mother’s condition. As a result, she said, she had advised her mother to refuse the proven covid-19 treatment remdesivir.

She was comforted when she learned that one of her old high school friends was a nurse manager in the ICU, and thrilled when her mom recovered after several days on the ventilator.

But she gives the credit to God, not to Johnston Memorial.

“It was definitely a miracle,” she said. “I had rallied the prayer warriors.” And while she no longer doubts the reality of covid-19, she said she still believes it has been exaggerated and that hospitals are falsifying cases to make money.”

She doesn't care. She knows the "save the children" Q brigade will be out in her area, and they consider masking to be worse than anything.

Maybe I'm being too cynical, but I believe it's more self-serving than that. I think the republican 180 is based on donors (for politicians) and sponsors (for Fox News, etc). threatening to withhold funds if they don't pivot their messaging. Wealthy donors (regardless of their political affiliation) and corporations don't want to be associated with people that continue to put out misinformation that might literally result in a large number of constituent deaths.

Another one, with several tweets mocking vaccines, Fauci and Biden. Come on, people, wake up. Vaccine - good, Covid - bad.

This is what this thread is about: highlighting the absurdity of anti-vax messaging by conservatives/Republicans in an effort that it encourages just one more person to get vaccinated.

Always so ironic when the thing that actually gets “shoved down their throats” is an intubation tube.
