I am sick of this don’t have an suv plea. How do you think people got around on the winter before there were big suvs? I’m from the Midwest and things didn’t grind to a halt 30 years ago when no SUVs. You clear your own car and learn to drive in the snow. I’m also sick of people saying we don’t have the snow equipment here. Do you think all of these little towns in the Midwest always had plows? No and many still don’t. People just take more responsibility and clear their own driveways and around their cars.

People have AWD and get snow tires and chains for the season. That’s not something people do around here.

And yes, snow plows have been around for like 100 years. Including in Midwestern towns. Also, Midwestern schools close for snow and ice with a pretty good degree of regularity.

I think some MoCo privates will be open Thursday. Just my thoughts but I could be wrong.

Begging you to stop using the Midwest as the measuring stick for snow preparedness. Your experience is irrelevant to a Mid-Atlantic climate.

PS, there were definitely SUVs 30 years ago (I had one) and there were certainly plows. Maybe you don't remember because you were a kid and so the infrastructure that went into making your town work was not visible to you.

Do you know how large cities like NYC and London handled snow before there were plows? The city and businesses paid an army of workers to shovel the streets. Nobody was out there on "personal responsibility" making commerce happen.

Maybe shoot for next Thursday. A lot of these people’s cars are snowed in and they plan on just waiting until it melts.

I am begging you to understand that schools in the Midwest and Alaska close for ice. Anchorage schools just closed last week because it got unseasonably warm, melting the snow, which refroze all over the below freezing streets and sidewalks.

Literally every business including restaurants, grocery stores, retail, that I drove by and can see this morning was open. Somehow schools are unable to.

Does it matter if schools aren’t open today? I am hoping for Friday but one more day won’t hurt them.

All the privates that follow MCPS which are many will not open tomorrow. Our school already sent out a statement saying they will continue to follow MCPS on closings. I guess we’ll see about Friday.

They can operate on a skeleton crew. Schools cannot.

Holton Arms will have a two hour delay on Thursday. I imagine other private schools will follow suit.

Had HA announced it already?

False. The reason is that if they are not open they make no money. These schools already got our money. As they say in contracting, “those who got the pesos do the say so” so in this situation we get screwed.

Generational ice storm and this is your take?

If it was just a snow storm, everyone would already be open. The problem is because of the ice, many side streets are completely unplowed and many others are practically speaking one lane with ice walls on either side (eliminating functional two way traffic).

Throwing school buses, teenage drivers, and normal commuting volume into that and you have a recipe for accidents and total gridlock.

It sucks, but turns out nature is more powerful than your desire not to spend time with your kids.
