Maybe if they’re married.

+1. A starting teacher with a BS makes under $55k. With a Master’s it’s about $60k. I’m 5 years in with a Master’s and make about $70k. I like my job but I’m very glad my husband is a high earner because I don’t make nearly enough to live on around here.

You think a person can’t live on $70k a year? DH and I both teach with others who are at about the same step as you and they are doing ok without housemates.

So, "okay" is good?

Yes. OK=Good. They have their apartment, car, go out with others and socialize.

They definitely don’t fall under “…don’t make nearly enough to live”.

So if you go back to the original question, they would NOT be UMC.

Well, the discussion evolved (as these threads do), and the pp said $70k was barely enough to live.

I agree that it is not UMC.

"A" person can live on $70k, sure. Just don't have kids without a partner who earns more or plan to buy a house for a long time. It's a long story but I'm a career switcher. I have kids and and a mortgage. That's not doable on $70k in Fairfax. We'd qualify for housing assistance in Fairfax County if I were the solo earner. I work with a couple brand new teachers on the BS scale who are single and still qualify for housing assistance.

PP here.
Of course. I was talking about a single person being able to live on $70k, not a family.

Sorry you couldn't pass the Praxis I. Stay mad.

Sure, you can live on it. But, around here, there won't be much left over for travel, nights out, etc. Do you know what rent is for a one bedroom apartment? Do you buy groceries? Gas? Clothes?

If teachers don’t like 3% raises maybe they can stop supporting School Board members who give them 3% raises and propose to give themselves 77% raises.

Not by themselves they aren't. Middle class union job at most, with most teachers coming from a blue collar background. Teaching is actually a good middle class job due to government benefits but you won't be UMC except through marriage or teaching at a university in a tenured faculty position.

The "74 million" is paid for by the Walton family (a big charter school supporter) and Betsy DeVos, among others. This is not a reputable news organization.

Where did you get the impression that teachers support the school board members?

Source for that. Certainly not the experience of the people I knew as a teacher.

"So as of last month, there are actually 41,800 more education employees than three years ago"

Yeah, those people aren't teaching. They are all outside of the classroom "specialists" and "coaches" and admin. We had quite a few vacancies all year and I work in a good school. At least three more teachers are leaving so I'm interested in who will fill all of those vacancies in addition to the ones from last year.

I’d be interested as well. All the teachers I work with came from UMC backgrounds.
