How much do teachers make? Are they considered belonging to UMC households?
Maybe if they’re married.
+1. A starting teacher with a BS makes under $55k. With a Master’s it’s about $60k. I’m 5 years in with a Master’s and make about $70k. I like my job but I’m very glad my husband is a high earner because I don’t make nearly enough to live on around here.
You think a person can’t live on $70k a year? DH and I both teach with others who are at about the same step as you and they are doing ok without housemates.
"A" person can live on $70k, sure. Just don't have kids without a partner who earns more or plan to buy a house for a long time. It's a long story but I'm a career switcher. I have kids and and a mortgage. That's not doable on $70k in Fairfax. We'd qualify for housing assistance in Fairfax County if I were the solo earner. I work with a couple brand new teachers on the BS scale who are single and still qualify for housing assistance.
PP here. Of course. I was talking about a single person being able to live on $70k, not a family.
