3% raise for teachers? What a joke FCPS!

Actually the minimum contract is 195 days and I have an 8 hour contract day. I average 9.5 hours a day. I guess you could subtract the 10 minutes it takes me to eat a sandwich-but I have students hanging out for lunch so maybe not.

It doesn’t really matter what you think of teacher salaries and schedules. What matters is the number of vacant jobs and the unqualified people who will end up staffing your child’s classes. Look at the special education vacancies. Even the ‘good’ schools can’t fill them.

I got 0% this year, so . . .

There are plenty of job postings if you’re interested.

How can we FCPS parents help chance this scenario? Our teachers deserve much better. Shame on our School Board. I am 😤!

Petition higher taxation.

This. You can wax poetic all you want about how many days teachers get off, etc. but until the pay is enough to get talented, smart people to teach your children, it's not enough.

They should get bonuses.

I’m sure your salaries are much higher to begin with.

My child's teacher makes $80k+

Ok. Unless they are married, 80,000 doesn’t get you much in this area. Salaries should match COL.

I make $80K and I am not a teacher.

Oh here we go again.

Agree. I lived in group housing with friends for many years in this area as a professional. Wasn’t my first choice, but it allowed me to travel and live in Arlington.

Compromises.

Pretty obvious this thread was only started by an ”FCPS parent” if that parent is also a teacher.

Yet these same people vote for School Board members who are happy to expand the FCPS bureaucracy and spend on wasteful programs like IB when more money could be going to teachers.

It’s not a step, plus 3%. It’s a step and 1.(something that equals about 3% more than you made this year)

3% is a perfectly reasonable COLA.

I think plenty of us would be okay paying teachers more if they were full time, year round. Teachers forget how much time they have off when they’re comparing their salaries. 80k would be 100k if they worked year round and got 3 weeks vacation.

Most districts around the country are only giving 3% or less for raises. I think districts can do what they want and or teachers with unions can go on strike. Yes, many teachers are leaving. If districts want to keep teachers they'll have to offer more money and improve conditions dramatically. Neither of those will happen and districts will bleed out teachers. It's just the facts.

Would you be happy with your kids on that schedule?
