Queen Elizabeth II

It must be said that she worked until her death. That is beyond admirable.
But, it is truly an end of an era, she was the Monarch of the British Empire when it was still a grand Empire. I certainly do not think that Empire was admirable, but there is no doubt that Britain shaped the way of thinking the world around, for better or, imo, for worse.
She did her duty and knew what that duty is till her last breath. Such monarch is nothing short of a miracle among the depravity of royalty around the world.

I think her getting COVID was the beginning of the end.

She was fairly healthy until then. Has has been failing since then

She was as healthy as the palace wanted you to believe.

The only royal I can hate on is Andrew and I’m sure even he is in pain right now.

He and his “wife” made Diane’s life miserable and Andrew Parker Bowles as well as all their children. They are two selfish people. They don’t deserve any respect.

It occurs to me that all those who behave like Camilla, like her exH, like Charles, like all of these people are awful.
Awful.
I just listened to the audiobook The Palace Papers, and the author was trying to explain the culture of secret overnights etc. Yes, it’s a real culture. Can’t be denied. But it’s terrible.
They all do it. Is that a good excuse? No. It’s a level of (im)morality I don’t subscribe to, and I know 5% of y’all on DCUM do!

Devastated is such a strong word. She was 96.

Have you lost both parents in a year? Heartless.

Phillip died over a year ago.

Actually kindof sad to work until your last breath instead of enjoying your life and family.

You must be an accountant.

And, she was 96!!! It’s not a tragedy.

Have you not heard “the special relationship” mentioned every time our leaders get tougher?
UK is in our top 5 allies.
We share so much culture.
Where have you been?

For all their faults, I feel that they served as a force for stability that helped the UK avoid disasters like the French and Bolshevik Revolutions, and helped the UK avoid insanities like fascism.

The Queen was kind of boring and ambivalent about change, which is pretty reflective of the British national character. It's served them pretty well.

Someone brave enough to take the contrarian position that overthrowing a monarchy is a disaster.

PP. I guess it depends on the monarchy being overthrown and the people doing the overthrowing. The Russian monarchy was bad enough that Bolshevism looked better, to some people. Given the disastrous state of Russia in 1917, I can't blame people for wanting a change. Of course, we can see with hindsight how badly that turned out.

The Brits have always kind of muddled on, taking a middling path. No one has been able to make a strong enough case (since Cromwell at least) that getting rid of the monarchy would lead to improvement. And, by the time the era of revolutions rolled around, the English monarchy had lost a lot of power compared to their Continental cousins.

Let’s not forget that they were all German.

If my parents die at 96, I’ll be devastated. Yes, it’s a very long life. I’ll still be devastated.

I found this tweet interesting, when discussing the lag time between death and announcements. Her father was hasted towards death to make the morning papers!

Yes, her kind is forever lost in this era of selfish, cutting off your parents and family because they did not buy you a Jeep when you turned 16 people.
Used to be that we all had duties that were not self centered. I am sure she found time to enjoy life too. Probably more than those that think life is about enjoying it all all the time.

Yes, and the leaders of our county should send their condolences. What I don’t get is individual Americans being obsessed with royalty and devastated that the queen has died (including posting on FB how sad they are and changing their profile pics!).
