There are an untold number of people in America who suffer from a form of mental illness. The overwhelming majority don’t commit mass murder. Some might get facial tattoos. Many are known to law enforcement from prior contacts. Some spend their waking hours posting crazy sh+t on the internet. (QAnon snyine?) some might even be what you consider to be unattractive. Nobody is monitoring every internet posting. And as far as we know he never explicitly threatened anyone. What’s your point?

He violated no law and none of the red flags in IL law. Law enforcement cannot monitor round the clock the 10s of millions of Americans with mental health issues. Ban the riffles.

Wasn’t it illegal to have those weapons in Highland Park? How long did he have them and did he when the police came for the violent threats?

Police went to his residence in 2019 twice, once because he said he was going to kill himself and second time because he had said he would kill everyone at home. No charges were pressed, because there was no sworn witness statement. He had no guns then, but had a collection of knives. His gun was legally purchased, per the police. This is why local bans are pointless if weapons can be legally purchased in the town over or the state over.

Totally disagree. Our country has tipped way over trying to protect the rights of criminals and the mentally ill. They need to be insttutionalized, in group home supervision, and/or under forced medications.

People with mental illness aren’t to be equated with criminals. They have constitutional, civil and human rights. What the hell is wrong with you? Do you know anything about congregate residential facilities for people with mental illness? Do you want one operating next door to your home? I didn’t think so. And most states closed their institutional facilities for people with mental illness and/or intellectual disabilities many years ago. Maybe you are the one who needs to be under forced medication.

I’d like to know the age at which he purchased the rifles. If he was under the age of 21 — and over 18 — then my understanding is that he needed parental consent under Illinois law.

1/3 of the country is diagnosed with a mental health illness every year. Probably higher since many go undiagnosed. We cant’t lock up or monitor 1/3 of the country.

ftfy. This isn't a mental illness thing. How often do you see 'mentally ill' women shooting up public places? It's an angry entitled male thing. Fact.

He isn't mentally ill. He is a loner who was radicalized online and who's GOP father totally ignored the warning signs and weakened gun safety laws allowed him to play out his nihlistic fantasy.

Ban the damn assault weapons. There is NO middle ground. If SCOTUS can say no middle ground to save fetuses, why can't we say no middle ground to save post birth lives?

Local prosecutors will go after the father to make an example out of him. As they should - bankrupt this creep and send him to prison too.

+1 million. The cries about mental illness are useless. He was likely depressed but this isn’t about his mental illness it’s about ACCESS to weapons that murder people so incredibly quickly and radicalization online. I can’t even get into the recent update that his Republican father who knew of all his threats co-signed for the FOID card. He should be charged.

I'm pretty pro-constitution, but if we can't buy alcohol or cigarettes until age 21, why not add all guns too. I don't think it will stop all shootings, but it's something.

Then, we should look at why our society is growing looney tunes. Just look at him. WTF. What is happening to children? We cannot pretend a shift isn't occurring. A disintegration of humankind.

I am not the PP. I grew up with a sibling with a developmental disability and know others with a range of mental illnesses. The only good thing Reagan did was to close these institutions and the worst thing he did was take all the savings and dole it out to his donors through tax cuts, etc. There should been been robust, wrap around services and there is just shit and real, real shit in states that did not expand their Medicaid coverage.

It's a horror that our current system equates mental illnesses with criminals, including locking up people w/o their anti-psychotic meds, etc. Many of these current mass shootings are committed by folks who are not mentally ill but due to the poison of their racism, their obsession with white supremacy, and/or their intoxication caused by Fox News, OAN, etc.

Like it or not, there are many people with mental illness who commit terrible crimes. Warning signs are often there from a young age. Yes, I think if they have a history like this young man did that there should be forced meds and/or supervised in group homes or institutionalized. I know what states did, and we are reaping the results with people walking around with the freedom to harm others.

You are naive if you think mental illness isn't an underlying contributor to many (not all) crimes.
