Africans and blacks in Ukraine

Well now.

Who knew that cancel culture would reach a country in which the people are literally fighting for their lives against a blood thirsty dictator?

+1 I am done with Ukraine.

This thread really opened my eyes. I was following news of the conflict avidly until now, cheering on their bravery, crying for their losses, worrying about them, looking for places to donate money to them, and seeing them as really heroic underdogs.

I had NO CLUE about the racism going on until I read this thread and googled the stuff reported on this thread. I'm shocked. I'm a woman of color and I feel sad and disgusted.

There are many other communities who need and deserve my attention, my energy, and my financial support. Not one more inch of that will be given to Ukraine.

You had no clue that there is a racism problem in Eastern Europe?

Look, I know that war is scary and emotional, but if you're going to cheer and cry for the heroic underdogs of Ukraine and then do a quick 180 to "these hateful people deserve what they get" because you just learned on a mom forum that there are racists in Eastern Europe, you don't have the maturity to weigh in on this discussion.

Ukraine is under siege and is the victim of Putin in this crisis. There are also racists in Ukraine. There are Nazis in Ukraine. Ukraine is also a very anti-Semitic place with a Jewish leader. Zelenskyy is doing a wonderful job, but he's probably done some shady shit, or yelled at his kids, or cut off a POC in traffic. Ukraine is putting up a heroic defense against the Russian invasion. There are racist Ukrainians mistreating POC. There are non-racist Ukrainians who are not mistreating POC. All of these things are true. You can stop supporting Ukraine if you want, but you will not find a community that will always be 100 percent worthy of your support.

Here's the deal. The PP that's doing the 180 dance is a confused amateur lightweight.

She is basing her decisions on optics which may change depending on what you see on the media. Unless you are writing this from Ukraine you don't really know what's happening there, you just know what others tell you and/or what you see in whatever newsfeeds you have in your face. So does this PP. There are many opinions that are already coming to light that aren't as pro-Ukraine and acknowledge some bad things Ukranian government had done over the years in the Eastern Ukraine supposedly against the ethic Russians. 16K people were killed over time. There is even a documentary on this. And yes, it's coming to light already that they have nazi organization (its influece is what we really know very little about and we have our own share of crazies).

The only thing said here that's correct is that no country is perfect and has zero corruption, you have to sort of assume that good guys aren't 100% saints and you have to keep your mind open to emerging info and a lot of disputed misinfo including old or unrelated footage being applied to this conflict (like pics of Zelenskyi is the war uniform). I already actually saw an article that the captured footage of Ukranians mistreating Africans is taken out of context, apparently some people got confused what train they had tickets for and were denied boarding the wrong train or something like this. Narrative can change fast and we are conditioned to change our opinions with it unless we have nothing else to do but dedicate our lives to researching unbiased and reliable info (hint: it's hard to find and is mixed in all the barrage of one sided propaganda coming from one side or another).

I am willing to bet the US is more racist than smaller countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, North, Central, or South America.

I was a Peace Corps volunteer in West Africa. Racism is rampant. Something that couldn’t be imagined here. All important positions are filled by one minority tribe. The Tuaregs, who are White, can’t get good jobs regardless of how well they do in school.

Racism is bad. I'm glad in our country we are speaking up against racism and are on the long, slow road to eradicating racism.

But...does every country have to be diverse like we are? So what if Ukraine/other Eastern European countries are nearly 100% white? There are other countries that are nearly 100% Asian, 100% Hispanic, 100% black. It is what it is.

There are racists all over in every single county. Not just white people can be racist.

You know those threads on DCUM that pop up occasionally that are titled something like "Things You Believe But Can't Say Out Loud?" Here is mine - yes, while every person is equally important, some regions/countries are more important than others. Yes - it is going to be a much bigger deal if Russia invades Ukraine and Europe enters a war and starts world war three than if some countries in Africa continue fighting each other.

I liked this one post I read the other day that said something like all this talk about racism - while true - going on in Ukraine is similar to people saying "All Lives Matter" during the last year. Now isn't the time the make racism equal to or above what is going on in Ukraine.

The US is among the least racist countries in the world. Does not mean we are doing it right. But less here than almost anywhere. Worse in Asia, Africa, South America than here.

How extensively have you traveled outside of the US?

Clearly many of you know nothing about the influx of economic migrants from Africa that has been flooding Europe for past few years. Just recently Poland had stand its ground while Belarus kept sending more and more of these immigrants to the borders, so they could illegally cross. It was a huge fight where these migrants, mostly men in their 20s. You can’t blame them now for being wary of Africans showing up from Ukraine. Yes, there is racism, however, Europe did not keep Africans as slaves, they don’t have to keep apologizing like Americans. If they are truly students and legal immigrants, where is Nigeria and the other African countries, helping their people?

America was a British colony when slavery was established here, just as it was in its island colonies. Slave ships were prevented from landing in America shortly after the adoption of the United States Constitution. The northern states abolished slavery. Of course, it took a war to eliminate slavery in the south.

What abject stupidity.

People refusing to support those who would happily see them dead. Imagine that!

You need to get the entire hell out of here. I’m not wasting a moment worrying about the lives of those who don’t care about mine. Ukrainians had better learn that pushing black and brown people off trains won’t save them from Putin’s bombs. Bob and weave and duck. Thoughts and prayers!

Don’t worry. If anything bad ever happens to you, we won’t lose sleep over you either.

You are wrong. I am from China. You have no idea what overt racism is. Like the whole bus laughing at a black guy.
