Africans and blacks in Ukraine

I keep seeing black people on SM saying they don't care about Ukraine (and 6 months ago about AFG) , presumably because they feel mistreated. I get that but cutting off your nose to spite your face and all that...

They might care when democracy falls everywhere. We are all connected these days.

They are economic migrants, they are bouncing from country to country, trying to find opportunities and ways to get to the west.

Is the west obligated to take them? Especially now, when they are dealing with actual war refugees?

Why aren't these mostly young and able-bodied people trying to make their own countries a better place?

These folks have had two weeks notice to get out. Ukraine is fighting a war of aggression. It owes nothing to foreign nationals who decided to stay until the last possible second and are now want their host country to divert resources to ensure their safety. They can take up a gun and fight, or they can hunker down.

Ukrainian border guards are prioritizing Ukrainian citizens in border crossing. It’s not clear in the reporting I’ve seen how differently British or French nationals, say, are being treated than citizens of African countries.

Some observations:

There's a black american in Ukraine who has been covering the invasion for The Root, CNN, etc. Terrell something? He's listed in other dcum threads. He is staying. He seems to have a lot of local friends who are fighting in the resistance. He hasn't discussed racism. He seems like a happy resident fully enmeshed in the local culture.

I did however notice CNN coverage of people fleeing Ukraine yesterday in cars and on foot. Despite the fact that men of a certain age aren't allowed to leave (at least that's what I heard), I saw a lot of men of color walking with suitcases in an effort to cross the border and get the heck out of dodge.

Here's what I know about the region--including Poland: it's very, very white. The US is far more colorful and diverse, and our racism pales in comparison to the overt white nationalist movement in Poland specifically.

I tend to agree with a PP that most non-whites in Ukraine are economic migrants without real connection with or loyalty to Ukraine. They're just looking for a safe place to live and work; this isn't their fight. Can't say I blame them.

As Michael Che said last night on SNL, it's weird to see a country invading a white country. Very unusual. I suspect many of the people of color fleeing Ukraine have BTDT in unstable countries and just want to find a better place to settle.

The US sent troops to Poland specifically to help american citizens cross and get back home.

I guess you would not be here to post, had your ancestors who immigrated to the US stayed in their country of origin and tried to make it a better place.
