Biden's VP?

Anonymous
The current level of nepotism in the WH trumps any of the small time instances cited here.

It absolutely wont be a net negative for the democrats regardless of who they pick as vp.

Not true. My mom and my in-laws get theirs in the mail. Lots of older people are extremely skeptical of online transactions.

Blacks and Hispanics ain't voting for the orange dumbass. Biden needs the Midwest and white suburban moms to blow Trump out of the water.

+2, if he goes with Whitmer that’s his thought process. Biden is already very popular with Black voters, they’re the ones who saved his campaign in SC by voting for him in huge numbers way above what anyone expected.

Other than the comparable amount of experience at the gubernatorial level, there is little evidence that Whitmer is like Palin. But there is certainly a risk that Whitmer does not have enough of a record at this point. We have not seen much from Whitmer other than her work on the COVID-19 response. While the numbers look good at the moment in MI compared to many other states, this is a pandemic. If there is a second wave in MI within the next 3 months, not only will Whitmer need to focus entirely on that, but she also may get blamed fairly or unfairly for not doing more or getting complacent. Newsome looked like a genius a couple of months ago but CA still got hit very hard.

Kamala Harris reminds me of John Edwards--flashy trial lawyer but with little substance. She probably is charming at cocktail parties and with donors (like he was) but does not seem to be able to think on her feet. Except when discussing her core issues related to law enforcement, she needs to be scripted, to memorize a bunch of lines that she says over and over again. She seems incapable of going off script effectively. Harris would be much better suited to be AG.

Rice seems a lot like Dick Cheney. She is not going to be asked to do a lot of politicking. Clearly, she knows her stuff and would be a reliable governing partner but could be viewed as polarizing.

Bass has not engaged much at the national level. She has less than 10 years in Congress, which is even less than Dan Quayle when we was picked to be VP and mocked by Lloyd Bentsen for his lack of experience. There is a risk that Bass will not be ready for the national spotlight. Why take that risk?

There is seemingly less risk with options like Warren, Duckworth, and Baldwin.

I am a huge fan of Baldwin. She is a strong progressive leader. But there is a lot of risk in picking a single lesbian woman.

Is there any polling on this? All Baldwin does is win elections, and in Wisconsin to boot (a Trump state in 2016). Biden will be fine at ceremonial stuff, giving reassuring speeches, and doing retail politics when that is possible. He needs a governing partner who has been in office long enough to actually have a good idea of what she is doing. Biden would be the most experienced president in history, but he seems way past his prime. There is a huge risk in picking someone who is untested.

Called it! This was the day after she got back from meeting Biden face to face.

"Days after the trip, Whitmer notably held a news conference to declare racism a public health threat, create an advisory council of Black leaders, require all state employees to do implicit bias training."

Good call!

+1.

Whitmer was supposed to be interviewed as part of a special on the VP selection process Sunday, I assume because she's a co-chair off his campaign. Appearance now cancelled. Significant?

Whiter has a 64% approval rating, is a broadly appealing candidate without the baggage of the other top-tier contenders. She makes sense as a safe pick.

^^she could manage the national pandemic response and liaise with governors on behalf of the White House. As an earlier PP said, has been at the forefront of governors on racial issues and her selection would result in the only Black governor in the country.

I think the press is a trial balloon. The recent Rice and Bass ones didn't go too well, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of angst about Whitmer.

I think that was LAST Sunday, which was the day she traveled to Deleware.

This is such a copout pick. She is a Governor like so many others such as Raimondo and Lujan Grisham. What makes her special?

I will vote for Biden but am not so enthused if the VP is going to be a white woman. I am a POC.

One word=Michigan (plus broader Midwest/swing state appeal). And yeah a safe pick is pretty much a cop out but when has Biden ever been a risk taker?

IF Whitmer is the pick, he decided he was willing to risk dampening POC enthusiasm and prioritize swing voters.

Her experience does not involve the scope of a National or international response. That would be Rice.
