Yup. They love them to mow their lawns, scrub their toilets, pick their fruit, watch their children... |
You are a nutter. Her Republican father helped her get elected as a Democrat how? She was estranged from him for several years. |
Bernie Bitter Bros are angry at Warren so they are trying to poison her candidacy by demanding he pick a WOC. |
Look, he helped her pay for her education undoubtedly. While ideologically they are clearly not the same, they have similar profiles, first time Governors, little to no foreign policy experience, not vetted on a national stage, have teens and their husbands have made some questionable choices. They also appeal to the same dynamic or are intended to - suburban women. |
You have a lot of sexist BS built in to your analysis. Her mother who died of cancer when Whitmer began her career was an educated and professional woman - your misogyny in erasing her is creepy and informs your weird reductionism of her career and accomplishments. |
Estranged when? She's on the record saying her dad got her her first internship at the Lansing Capitol her senior year of college. Before that she wanted to be a sports reporter. |
You are hilarious - being an intern at the Capitol in Lansing was not a choice gig then (or ever). I was an intern there in high school and all I had on my “resume” was “junior government explorer” club. No connections whatsoever. ![]() |
This is nothing. I bet if you read the bios of every political figure, you can find instances of nepotism in 70%+. Also, it is the Michigan State Capitol, not the world bank. Lets not make a mountain out a molehill. |
Ageeed. She is a lightweight pick. |
I disagree with all the Whitmer-Palin comparisons. However, with only two years in the Governors mansion, she may not be the best choice. With that being said, Whitmer is dynamic, a great speaker, and charming. If she continues to build a resume of fighting for the working class in Michigan, helps mount an economic comeback in the next few years, and builds a strong partnership between the state and the Biden white house, she will be a killer candidate in 2024. She is only 48 and has a long career ahead of her. |
This is a "Do No Harm" pick for Biden. It is important to look at recent history and avoid repeating mistakes.
Other than the comparable amount of experience at the gubernatorial level, there is little evidence that Whitmer is like Palin. But there is certainly a risk that Whitmer does not have enough of a record at this point. We have not seen much from Whitmer other than her work on the COVID-19 response. While the numbers look good at the moment in MI compared to many other states, this is a pandemic. If there is a second wave in MI within the next 3 months, not only will Whitmer need to focus entirely on that, but she also may get blamed fairly or unfairly for not doing more or getting complacent. Newsome looked like a genius a couple of months ago but CA still got hit very hard. Kamala Harris reminds me of John Edwards--flashy trial lawyer but with little substance. She probably is charming at cocktail parties and with donors (like he was) but does not seem to be able to think on her feet. Except when discussing her core issues related to law enforcement, she needs to be scripted, to memorize a bunch of lines that she says over and over again. She seems incapable of going off script effectively. Harris would be much better suited to be AG. Rice seems a lot like Dick Cheney. She is not going to be asked to do a lot of politicking. Clearly, she knows her stuff and would be a reliable governing partner but could be viewed as polarizing. Bass has not engaged much at the national level. She has less than 10 years in Congress, which is even less than Dan Quayle when we was picked to be VP and mocked by Lloyd Bentsen for his lack of experience. There is a risk that Bass will not be ready for the national spotlight. Why take that risk? There is seemingly less risk with options like Warren, Duckworth, and Baldwin. |
Agreed. Just look at the bios of the 2020 candidates. Kamala Harris got her first positions on commission from her boyfriend, Willie Brown. Gillibrand comes from an incredibly well connected family in Upstate New York. Cory Booker's parents were IBM executives that fundraised a majority of the donations for his first runs in Newark. Tulsi's dad is a known activist and long-time state legislator in Hawaii, Julian Castro's mother was a famous political activist in San Antonio. Joe Biden's son capitalized a ton off of his name, joining corporate boards and investing overseas. The reality is that our current political system is fueled by nepotism and connections. There are solid critiques of Whitmer, that isn't one of them. |
I am a huge fan of Baldwin. She is a strong progressive leader. But there is a lot of risk in picking a single lesbian woman. |
+1. Sad but True. |
