To announce they're opening on-time?

+1 on-time

We’ll be lucky if it is just a delay. I think they won’t open at all.

Agree. Likely closed for one more day.

Highly unlikely. Taylor got a lot of flack today for closing. With the county being done with the roads they're responsible for, it would be hard to justify another closure.

Who is he getting flack from?

You're kidding.

No one blamed him for Monday or Tuesday, but MCPS building services were out working on Monday and Tuesday to open schools. And he didn't. Not even on a delay. Not even child care programs. He absolutely got flack.

And now he's going to need to add a make-up day, something he probably never experienced in his old job. I'm sure people have been telling him what a mess that is going to be.

ES parents I know are upset about it being code red. Fine if schools have to close for students/teachers, but they should be open for the aftercare providers to be able to offer services. There is really no justification for them being closed today, other than wanting to give administrators time off.

There is a reason….no safe place to park if the lots aren’t cleared yet. Can’t clear the lots if they have cars on them.

Let the schools with cleared lots open then. The other schools will only make that mistake once.

For the millionth time, it does not work that way.

Sure thing!

CODE YELLOW - DELAYED OPENING - Thursday, January 9, 2025

Out of an abundance of caution due to extremely cold temperatures and overnight refreezing causing dangerous conditions in some areas, MCPS will open schools and offices 2 hours late.

We will be reevaluating this decision by early morning and, if necessary, will announce any change by 5 AM

Students, staff and visitors should exercise caution when traveling to and from school and be mindful of personal safety. MCPS and county staff have readied roads, sidewalks and school sites to be as snow and ice free as is possible.

Emergency personnel report on time and follow guidelines for work on delayed openings. Other 12-month administrative facilities employees in transportation, food services and maintenance need to report on time. Morning buses pick up 2 hours late.
Field trips and other activities and programs that begin at 10:30 am or earlier are canceled (such as the Thomas Edison High School of Technology).
Infant and Toddler appointments scheduled before 10:00 am will be canceled and services scheduled after 10:00 am will continue as scheduled.
AM PreK/Head Start and AM PreK Special Education programs are canceled.
PM PreK/Head Start and PM PreK Special Education programs will begin at their regularly scheduled time.
School ends at normal dismissal time.
Before, after-school, and childcare programs may operate as scheduled, families are encouraged to contact their childcare provider.
Community Use programs occur as scheduled.

IMPORTANT NOTE: As a result of cold temperatures, all outdoor activities will be brought inside, including recess, physical education classes, or any other outdoor activity.

Its 2 hr delay

Seriously? LOL MCPS is not for real. This was a MILD snow event. Imagine if it had been a foot.

So what do folks think? Does the "we will reassess" mean if will probably turn into a closure? Does the "abundance of caution" language mean it probably won't? Any guesses?

My advice to MCPS: for maximum parent frustration, announce closure of childcare programs tomorrow at 5am along with closure of MCPS offices. Let parents know they are free to take kids shopping at the numerous establishments that have been open since Tuesday.

So disappointing that our kids will be back to learning

It's weird to me that they have had offices closed for 3 days and are now delaying the opening of offices tomorrow as well, while bringing students in at the same time. Usually there's some buffer, like offices open on time while schools are late or closed. And I thought half the point of a 2-hour delay was to buy yourself time until 7:00 to make a change, not 5:00.

It will after they do it once, because no school will drop the ball like that again.
