professors are leaving florida - and turning down job offers in florida - because of desantis

You understand that having miles of beaches unusable because of ecology issues becomes and economic development and revenue problem, right?

The brain drain from places like Florida and Texas will be slow enough that it won't really be noticed until it's critical - that's my 2 cents anyway.

If the GOP continues to dominated in red states I think the quality of life (and cost of living) will improve in blue states and decline in red states but you won't see any real effects for 15-20 years. I think one more electrical grid failure may start to turn the tide in Texas, but I'm not exactly holding my breath. There seems to be a massive amount of ignorance and apathy among the citizenry that governmental actions are carried out through the officials they elect.

I agree- in the short term, I think a lot of the positions get backfilled. I’m in a biology field and I can’t tell you how many of my grad school colleagues jumped from post-doc to post-doc after finishing their phd. Some did ultimately become professors but others left academia for govt, etc. More aspiring professors than spots available, and a few years at a FL university is not a bad gamble if it’s a stepping stone to somewhere better. And some would hedge their bets that FL will turn back towards the middle eventually. But if FL does not self-correct, and it becomes increasingly expensive to own and insure a house, the brain drain will be very real.

As one of those professors who went into another non academic field, there is no way I would go back. Once you start making more money, it's hard to take a pay cut to move to Florida.

Because people have an idealized of "beach life" that is not really true. I won't go into all of the reasons why that is (they are well covered) but it has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with the belief you'll be watching Manatees from the beach while sipping a Marg in the sun all day. . . . So, let's be honest about that.

But think of all the people driving around the dmv with their Florida plates. Those people count as living in Florida, right? Even though they clearly don’t. So how many people are domiciled in Florida for tax purposes, but don’t actually have to deal with the negative consequences of desantis’ idiocy?

Until you just said it, I hadn't realized it. But I do see this a fair amount. Cars with FLA plates in the DMV.

Interesting theory.

A lot of military personnel are stationed in Florida at some point and it is quite common to switch their home of record to Florida to avoid state income taxes for the rest of their careers. That accounts for a lot of the Florida car tags in the DC area, especially in Virginia. They also vote absentee in Florida.

So they cheat on their taxes just like Trump.

No. They take advantage of a benefit offered to them. It’s not cheating. Do not conflate with what Trump does which absolutely is cheating.

If you live and work somewhere else, yes, I’d call that cheating.

Referring to the snowbirds. Military don’t account for all the FL plates here and in NY.

I'm in Maine and the FL plates are everywhere here for one day under 6mos per year. It's likely some of them are fine with FL politics, but I know for certain that many are horrified by what's happening in their domicile.

Yes. Lots of enlisted personnel driving Porsches and sending their kids to private school in the DMV.

Voucher time.

An explosion of private options would be fantastic for education.

All that does is make grifters rich.

This grifter is certainly getting rich.

Well: It’s Both. A cash grab AND an ideological war. While Trump was probably more focused on the cash grab and others, including DeSantis might be more focused on the ideology, the MAGA thirst for power almost always seems to involve Both.
