So what's the secret of Jewish parenting? How do you raise such successful children that excel academically and later in careers?
Please do, share. |
Every Jewish friend of mine except two are single and I keep in touch with about 50 of them. From what I can see they stress their children should be doctors, lawyers, or go into business and don't consider any other fields successful so in the end they have kids who go into those well paying fields. If you're single and have a good job, you'll typically be wealthy. |
But how do you get them into medical and law schools? |
Broad stereotypes of any large group are dangerous. However, Jewish families tend to prioritize education and possess both the social and financial capital to make sure their children achieve. Learning and studying are a major component of Judiasm and the push to be well-educated is reinforced within the community. |
Social pressure and growing up in families and societies who expect excellence go a long way. |
I read "The blessing of a skinned knee". The author, a Jewish psychotherapist, has 2 daughters and they didn't seem to do anything extraordinary at home - they went to school, playdates, had one music lesson a week and some tutoring. |
Learning and studying and family sacrifice/generosity. |
I agree, but am compelled to point out that with one exception, no one in my Jewish DH's extended family (including DH) is terribly successful or high-achieving. |
How many Jews do you know? All lawyers and doctors? Are you insane? |
I am not Jewish, but many of my close friends are. I think in general, Judaism as a culture reveres knowledge, intellectual curiosity, and education. If people are taught to value education and invest time in their education, then why wouldn't they be successful on average? |
DH's family is loaded with Jack McFarlands and Simon Moons. ![]() |
This. And paying for college where possible. I knew that my parents would pay for a reasonable college and a reasonable major (not basket weaving somewhere random). And I am very grateful and will do te same for my kids. Also, there was little praise for trying only for results (not necessarily top results but good ones). However if there were real problems help was given either with them helping directly to learn a a concept or getting tutoring etc. |
Yes, it's true. All Jewish parents parent in exactly the same way. And we all raise successful children that excel academically and later in careers. Each and every single one of them. How do we do this? By sending them to sleepaway camp for months at a time, from the age of 6 onwards, while we go on vacation and post our pictures on Facebook. |
LOL!! I was going to post the same thing but you beat me to it! Now everyone knows our secrets. |
I thought they were good with money |
