We were in a tournament last year where one of the tie breakers was point differential I think up to 6 goals. We were ahead by 7 goals and they referee told me to back off and asked me to be more sportsmanlike and I think the ref adjusted her officiating to allow the other team to get back in it and to slow us down a bit. This makes sense for a league game but, you are right, the tournament rules encourages teams to run up the score. I don't think there is a reason for it other than that they need something to break ties after head-to-head results and least goals allowed.

Yeah, I've seen tournaments use goal differential to break ties, but what the DMV Premier Cup does is different: it awards points for goals scored in addition to awarding points for wins and ties. So it can be the case that the team you beat, and the team you have a better win-loss record than, is actually ahead of you in the standings because that team ran up the score by an extreme amount against another opponent. This system must be intended to encourage offensive-minded soccer, but I think it's bogus -- no, *totally* bogus.

Yikes. That's crazy. It is by wins in every other tournament.

The goal differential usually only comes into play when two teams are tied in standings. The more points/less goals against/more goals/shutouts moves forward.

Not true about the scoring. Go to Tournament website. In u10 group top ranked team is 2 and 0 and has goal differential of 7. Second place team is 1 and 1 with a goal differential of 11.

Huh? At the DMV Premier Cup, teams receive three points for a win, one point for a shutout, and up to five points for goals scored. They don't get three points for a win, one point for a tie, and so on. That's why you see scores like 13-0 at this tournament. Not great.

So much American insecurities they have to make up for their shortfalls to add for points for things that don't mean anything.

Sigh. No -- Arlington won two games and earned 14 points, not 6. The 6-0 victory counted for 9 points, not 3.

Well, the incentive is to win every game 5-0. If you do that, you get 9 points, which is the most you can possibly get for a single game. If there's a 13-0 score, that's on the coach for trying to make up for being a eunuch.

For the one or two people keeping track of this:

In the DMV Cup:
A 1-0 win counts for five points.
A 6-5 loss counts for five points.
A 2-1 win counts for five points.
A 5-5 tie counts for five points.

So it's goals, not necessarily wins, that matter most. Whether that's good or bad, I don't know.

But great tournament with top-class facilities and administration. We're lucky to have this event so close to home.
