I wonder if it wouldn't be political suicide for Biden not to pick a Black woman at this point. But each of the Black women has real downsides to offset their upsides: Bass (radical leftist tag, inexperienced national campaigner but would guarantee Black turnout, be an excellent governing partner and great Dem coalition pick), Harris (high negatives and less appealing governing partner but most famous, telegenic and charismatic in the group), Rice (brilliant but Obama admin rehash that has the highest political negatives), and Demings (does not meet readiness bar and problems with Orlando police dept over which she presided but perhaps most appealing to swing voters in this group). There is no clear answer imo. I don't have a clue which way Joe should or will go here. |
"A Black?" Egads, Biden is not under pressure from POC of color to pick a woman of color - he seems to be under some pressure from young white millennials (who NOT AAs, actually cost us the election in 2016) on the left flank - but AAs could give zero effs if he picks Harris or Bass or whomever - they just want to win and get Trump who is killing them out of office. Appointing an AA on SCOTUS or AG would be far more consequential than VEEP. Heck, assuming Biden cannot last two terms, we will likely have an AA governor from whom to pick in 2024. |
A black woman/person, not "a black". This isn't the 1950s, let's do better |
Agree with every point of this. |
I disagree. if he doesn't pick a Black women, sends an implicit message they were "less than" the white candidate selected. I know Black voters want to win, but I still think turnout could be affected. It doesn't take much to affect the outcome, as with HRC. |

Anyone watch Harris on MSNBC a Chris Jansing. It was an absolute joke ...the questions were the biggest softballs. |
She's not sharp when it comes to articulating policy (and knows it so is nervous) and is terrible when put on the spot in any way. Even when tightly scripted she tends to flub when speaking. Given she brings no real policy or legislative prowess to the table, I've never understood why she's no. 1 on so many ranking lists. |
+3, and I’m “a black” ![]() He could pick C Rice and we would vote for him. That would be a bold move but could he trust her or is she a safe gop defector? Eh. Just a musing. |
She is insecure and she will be eaten alive when gloves come off, unless she has some back door deals Always makes me suspicious of those pushing her and force feeding her. She is not personable. And clearly she used her looks which is something attractive women have to always work twice as hard to prove that it isn’t all about looks. I mean - Should Kim Kardashian be a First Lady? She is telegenic and has just about as much charisma. And she is going to law school too, right? /s |
No. he is not under "tremendous pressure" to select "a Black" right now. First, there is a small very vocal demographic that is pushing him to select a black candidate. It was a very hot topic right after George Floyd and Breonna Taylor's deaths. But since late June, that very emotional desire has decreased. Now, the majority (it was around 73% June 30/July 1, but has been going up), believe that Biden needs to pick the right candidate regardless of race. The majority of minority voters that are interested in voting for Biden want Biden to win reelection more than they want to have a person of the right demographic group be selected. For most minorities, they understand and believe that Biden will have a much more diverse set of appointments both cabinet and judicial and that there would be many opportunities for first representatives of many demographics to get government representation. |
Joe should pick the best one for him in terms of comfort level and governing support. Unfortunately there is a tiny pool of qualified WOC this time, but that will change. I just heard more than 200 WOC are running for Congress this cycle. The future looks bright. |
The insanity of people demanding a black woman rather than the most qualified/best positioned to help Biden win is just so depressing. We’ve devolved into a country of imbeciles. |
The funny thing is this —- no one is demanding a black woman. Not even black women. Klobuchar threw shade about it when she was salty and the lie got legs. It has been shut down numerous times. Repeating the lie is promulgating it at this point. |
