Can we just say "placement" please? Exmissions is a fake word that only exists here on this message board.

How does GDS do with regard to college placement?
Anonymous
This discussion of college placements always amuses me. You people do realize that all of these schools send their kids to a number of excellent colleges? This is true for almost all of the good public schools around here as well. In addition, the thought that there is just a small number of good colleges is ridiculous. Just think about the great number of people you know who went to good-but-not-Ivy-League schools and who are smart, capable adults doing the same job as you do. I always admired the education that my DH received at an independent school out in the hinterlands. Yes, he was a smart kid anyway, but it was obvious that the school taught him to think critically; something that my own very good public school did not do for its students. That is the sole reason I wanted to send my kids to an independent school (although we waited until middle school to apply). Pick a school for your child based upon how you feel about it and not for its "exmissions." Your child will thrive where they feel comfortable. We are all fortunate to live in a place where there are so many excellent schools and to have kids that would - let's face it - do well almost anywhere because their parents are well-educated and care about their children's education.

After you get through the star students and athletes, most are stuck at places like, well, Kenyon. STA places most of their class well "above" there, at least if you'r considering the USNWR annual rankings.

OK, I'm the loser that was looking at these things at 1am, so you know I'm a data-driven person. If you're going to expect me to believe a claim about "deep" or "shallow" college placement, you're going to have to support it with some data. I don't have time to research this one myself. By the way, I agree with the person who pointed out that it would be a mistake to evaluate/rank elementary and high schools based solely on where their graduates go to college. I suppose that's one consideration (mainly because it is a measure of other attributes about the school such as academic rigor), but I agree it's just one factor among many.

14:57 here. We honestly loved Beauvoir as well but felt St Pats was better for our child and our family (this was a few years ago) and, we are equally as attracted to Landon & Holton as NCS-StA, so that was not a factor for us. St Pats has a great record at all 4 and there won't be the pressure to choose one over the other because of institutional loyalty or because all of child's friends are going to StA/NCS I also like the possibility of moving at any grade between 3/4 and 8. 6th actually seems ideal to us but it willl depend opn ERB scores and academic achievement in next couple of years. We also, honestly, fell completely in love with St Pats and it has turned out incredibly well for us.

PP, a great message. The idea that there are only 3 or 4 schools worth considering is incredible to me. It's great that you made the wise decision to choose the school that was right for your child under many circumstances. We are happy to be accepted by Potomac and have chosen it over 2 other "DC schools". Potomac is actually ranked higher than a couple of the others for ivy league college admissions - but don't tell that to people on this forum.

Not bad, inasmuch as the overwhelming majority end up going to college. As for the name brands? It rates the same as the top suburban publics in Mongtomery/Fairfax/Arlington counties - sprinkling of Ivies very year, spoonfuls of the strong liberal arts colleges and "Public Ivies," but over half if not more not in that category at all.

Is anyone still waiting for a letter from Beauvoir?

I don't know the source of your information. I am a GDS parent and am privy to the information that has been reported thus far for early decision this year. Your description is way off base. No, I won't share the information because it's not mine to share.
