Congrats on acceptance to Beauvoir. May I ask if you found out recently and came off the waitlist? I am wondering if there is still hope for us. Also, if you did come off the waitlist -- how did you hear? Thanks.

In response to the poster who mentioned that the odds of getting into the big schools when asking for aid is alot lower is CORRECT. I sort of have first hand experience. I applied to Sidwell and Georgetown Day and for Sidwell I requested financial aid (went through the whole process of sending tax returns, etc) and did not request it at Georgetown Day. Well, we got a outright rejection from Sidwell and accepted at Georgetown Day. I really do think it is because there are even more limited spots for those requesting financial aid ( seriously doubt the need blind policies of all schools). After the acceptance I then requested financial aid and was given a limited amount (I assume what was left over after other financial aid applicants declined, etc). We only applied to these two schools, btw. In the event we did not get aid we still would have attended and just got into debt for it. We do not own a home so taking equity out of home was not a option. Just wanted to tell people who are going through the process that I DO think it hurts a little when applying. Maybe you can wing it the first year and then apply for aid the second year if attending that school is important to your family. We had no real option since our DC public is terrible.

Most schools state that if you can afford to pay for the first year (say kindergarten) then they expect you to be able to contribute that same amount the following yrs. So if you need aid, request it. Many people ask for aid (even those who make more than $100K.

Thank you. No, I wasn't on the waitlist. This is just the first time I have read this thread, so I decided to post our information. I do not want to squander your hopes, but from what I have heard, there are very few spots ever on their waitlist, as most people accepted do attend. (Please don't flame me for saying this people, I am just passing on info.!) However, I would call the admissions office and just ask them directly, as you never know and if they know that you are really still interested and able and willing to go, then you never know! Good luck!

In response, regarding to applying for aid that is, no one can really say for sure that it affects your chances of getting in. Regardless of how you formulate your suspicions no one person other than the admissions committee knows for sure who is in or who is out. We applied for aid and were accepted to several big named schools. We eventually settled on our first choice, so my advice is that you apply if you need it and let the chips land were they may.

Have the Beavoir siblings heard yet?

Someone here on DCUM reminded me of this adage last week: It's the student, not the school.

12:43 Those rejections were blessings in that they saved you tens of thousands of dollars. That said, might you have pursued swimming, JHU, Mandarin and piano etc. if he'd gone to Beauvoir or Sidwell since they're extracurriculars?
Frankly, I don't understand the family which feels the need to shove a 2nd grader into pre-algebra, Mandarin, piano, Spanish, and swimming lessons.
The child's IQ is 146! He is not being shoved into anything. BTW I am not the parent of this child. I just can't stand when people say we are pushing are kids, when they are really pulling us.
I am not the pp but just wondering when does your child just play and be a kid? Even smart kids need to play and just be silly! If they can't do that as a kid, when will they ever get to be a kid and play in the mud and sand and use their imaginiation?
Response ( not PP) You just don't understand gifted kids....noone drives them they suck you dry by the time they are about three and then they start looking elsewhere : wherever their long attention span , advanced reasoning ability and curiosity lead them. Certainly, this may be out into the woods or up in a tree , but doubt it will be in front of the boob tube or jer**** off with a Wee

Hopefully those gifted kids will be hanging around people who use slightly more polite and eloquent language.
