Most of Crossfield is less than three miles from new school.
Most of Crossfield is around 10 miles from Oakton.

So, less than a ten minute bus ride compared to at least a 30 minute bus ride--likely more.
Oakton is at capacity and huge new construction is coming. So, facing a redistricting within a few short years.
Oakton is a good school.
New school will be a good school.

If you were in charge--without emotional attachments--what would you do?

Stay with Oakton since the new school is an unknown. No clue about the teachers, no clue about what after school activities are there as per today's meeting we don't know the number of students, and no clue about the student body itself and what needs it may have, and no clue if its AP or IB.

For me, both schools are equidistant time wise. No one is getting a 10 min ride to KAA unless they're the last stop on a bus route. And the 10 KAA buses they have are smaller than a regular FCPS bus.

WHAT are you talking about - 10 KAA busses? Nobody is using KAA busses, there will be at least 30 FCPS busses. It will be the same transportation-wise as Carson. We are the first stop on both the Carson and Oakton routes in the morning and it is 20 minutes to Carson and 45 to Oakton.

It's also a MUCH easier drive for high school students. I don't like the idea of having my high schooler take the highway or those windy roads down to Oakton when it's basically a straight shot and three traffic lights to get to KAA from most of Franklin Farm and the surrounding neighborhoods. Maybe an extra light if you live in Folkstone.

Also, from what I've heard in talking to teachers I know, these are going to be in demand jobs. A lot of teachers live in Prince William and Loudoun and this is a shorter commute, just off 28.

Agreed!

Floris - Super excited, wants to be all in
Oak Hill - Mostly excited, sees the value but some skepticism
Coates & McNair - Doesn’t realize there is a new Western HS, but sure why not?
Fox Mill - Mostly excited, apparently some people like IB
Crossfield - Oh hell nah! The parking lot at Oakton is paved with gold, some silent resistance exists

Did I get that right? 😜

Yep. Crossfield is filled with a lot of lily white rich parents and they want their Oakton no matter what.

4/5 of the people speaking up for Crossfield were Asian. The lone person who wanted Crossfield to move to western HS was White.

I am an Asian myself and generally Asian people love highly ranked schools.

It actually is overcrowded and projected to be even more crowded in five years. Reid said they had 200 new students this year alone.

Oakton is going to be massively overcrowded in just a couple years. Here are the pending developments I'm tracking, and I'm sure there is more one-off housing under construction.
Redwood Plaza AND Flint Hill Office Park sites
Fair Oaks Business Park
Fairfax Ridge
AT&T Site
ICF International Property

Oakton is guaranteed to be well over 105% at the next review. Carson is either going to KAA now or to South Lakes in 5 years.

Correction to above: Crossfield is going to KAA/Western now or South Lakes in 5 years.

So many people commenting who weren't at the meeting.

Dr. Reid said that they bought the 10 KAA buses for $30k each which was a deal compared to $112k that the typically pay. Of course they may have more buses than that to service the school.

Guess what, my kid is the next to LAST bust stop for Carson and 3rd to last for Oakton and its the opposite experience...

This is true, it is more of a priority than sport team rankings. In my culture it is a priority hence people want to go for the known highly ranked school vs the unknown.

As Susie Orman would say, wants are different than needs. I hope the school board sees right through these people.

And, again, I'm guessing that neither high school is the closest high school to you.

The school board should just swap fox mill for Crossfield at south lakes and send fox mill to western. Then all the Crossfield parents complaining about “the unknown” of western won’t have anything to complain about. Problem solved.

Fox Mill is much closer to South Lakes than most of Crossfield--which is Franklin Farm.

You think they are going to use only the ten KAA buses to transport 2000 students? I'm guessing those buses will be used for Special Ed buses if they are smaller.
School buses, like money, can be fungible.

As for equidistant, I think we both know that most of Crossfield lives in Franklin Farm. The schools are far from equidistant--and time wise, they are absolutely not the same. But, you know that.

I don 't live in franklin farm though....

https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/boundary-maps/Crossfield_ES_1.pdf

Geographically, half of crossfield is west of west ox, and half is east. The houses on the west side tend to be smaller, the houses on the east side tend to be bigger with much less density as shown on the map.

KAA is a 15 min drive from where I live, and.. so is oakton.

Dp

I'm zoned for crossfield but it's a 10 min drive and navy is a 3 min drive. Crossfields border is quite wide but not that tall.

Crossfield is very close to South Lakes. they should be sent there.

Sure but fox mill wants to go to western and for Crossfield at least south lakes is much closer than Oakton and it’s “known” with all the sports they claim they need.

So fox mill gets what they want. Crossfield gets what they want. And the school system saves everyone money not bussing kids from Franklin farm all the way to Oakton. Everyone wins.

This is what I don't get about the Oakton mom's sports arguments - younger kids play on CYA. All these kids are talking about how excited they are that they'll be in middle school together at Carson. Then Oakton moms are going to tear them apart where only Crossfield kids go to Oakton. It's a terrible idea and I'm so mad at the parents of teens for being so selfish and short sighted.

What are you talking about? Navy and Waples Mill kids play CYA sports...and they go to Oakton. The Crossfield vs. Navy Basketball game is one of the biggest events in the area mainly because all the students at both schools have been in CYA teams together.

I'm not sure what house size has to do with anything but the vast majority of the Crossfield population is West of West Ox & Lawyers Rd. It's just Folkstone that is east.
