Floris - Super excited, wants to be all in
Oak Hill - Mostly excited, sees the value but some skepticism
Coates & McNair - Doesn’t realize there is a new Western HS, but sure why not?
Fox Mill - Mostly excited, apparently some people like IB
Crossfield - Oh hell nah! The parking lot at Oakton is paved with gold, some silent resistance exists

Did I get that right? 😜

Yep. Crossfield is filled with a lot of lily white rich parents and they want their Oakton no matter what.

4/5 of the people speaking up for Crossfield were Asian. The lone person who wanted Crossfield to move to western HS was White.

FCPS just finished a multi million dollar renovation of Oakton. And it’s not overcrowded. This isn’t oakton’s problem to solve.

One of the guys answering questions in the breakout room said that the Oakton kids were being discussed because geographically it makes sense, it has nothing to do with Oakton being over capacity but that the boundary makes sense.

There is a huge development going in Oakton boundary. And, be careful what you wish for.......

Oakton is now overcrowded. Fall 2025 membership is 2711 and program capacity is 2642.

It’s at 103% capacity this fall, so overcrowded but not to the point (over 105%) that they’d redistrict simply to address overcrowding. But of course they can look at transportation distances as well when considering the boundaries for a new school.

Let's see. Put on your thinking cap.

Most of Crossfield is less than three miles from new school.
Most of Crossfield is around 10 miles from Oakton.

So, less than a ten minute bus ride compared to at least a 30 minute bus ride--likely more.
Oakton is at capacity and huge new construction is coming. So, facing a redistricting within a few short years.
Oakton is a good school.
New school will be a good school.

If you were in charge--without emotional attachments--what would you do?

Stay with Oakton since the new school is an unknown. No clue about the teachers, no clue about what after school activities are there as per today's meeting we don't know the number of students, and no clue about the student body itself and what needs it may have, and no clue if its AP or IB.

For me, both schools are equidistant time wise. No one is getting a 10 min ride to KAA unless they're the last stop on a bus route. And the 10 KAA buses they have are smaller than a regular FCPS bus.

Jagels is the name they discussed this morning.

WHAT are you talking about - 10 KAA busses? Nobody is using KAA busses, there will be at least 30 FCPS busses. It will be the same transportation-wise as Carson. We are the first stop on both the Carson and Oakton routes in the morning and it is 20 minutes to Carson and 45 to Oakton.

It's also a MUCH easier drive for high school students. I don't like the idea of having my high schooler take the highway or those windy roads down to Oakton when it's basically a straight shot and three traffic lights to get to KAA from most of Franklin Farm and the surrounding neighborhoods. Maybe an extra light if you live in Folkstone.

Also, from what I've heard in talking to teachers I know, these are going to be in demand jobs. A lot of teachers live in Prince William and Loudoun and this is a shorter commute, just off 28.

It actually is overcrowded and projected to be even more crowded in five years. Reid said they had 200 new students this year alone.

You think they are going to use only the ten KAA buses to transport 2000 students? I'm guessing those buses will be used for Special Ed buses if they are smaller.
School buses, like money, can be fungible.

As for equidistant, I think we both know that most of Crossfield lives in Franklin Farm. The schools are far from equidistant--and time wise, they are absolutely not the same. But, you know that.

I don 't live in franklin farm though....

Geographically, half of crossfield is west of west ox, and half is east. The houses on the west side tend to be smaller, the houses on the east side tend to be bigger with much less density as shown on the map.

KAA is a 15 min drive from where I live, and.. so is oakton.

Dp

I'm zoned for crossfield but it's a 10 min drive and navy is a 3 min drive. Crossfields border is quite wide but not that tall.

And, South Lakes is probably closer than either one to you.

We both know that way more than 50 percent--probably well more than 75 percent of Crossfield lives in Franklin Farm--which is far closer.
